Twilight: Put on Your Spidey Senses

Posted by Twilight_News - 13/01/10 at 02:01 pm

When word hit the street that Toby McGuire wouldn’t be reprising his role as our building swinging hero, speculation started as to who his replacement would be.  Rumor also has it that the next movie is the hugely popular franchise will focus on Peter Parker’s teen years. The UK’s Mirror mentioned Robert Pattinson, although that seems a longshot to us. Rob’s great but isn’t quite the average-looking, boy next-door,pseudo- geek the role call s for.  MTV’s Hollywood Crush is suggesting that Michael Welch is closer to the character.

What do you think? Is there hope for Twilight to meet Spiderman?

I think Michael Welch would do great! I can’t really imagine Robert as spiderman though, not because he couldnt possibly look like a cute, geeky kid but because he would have to play an action hero and i just dont see him in a red&blue spidersuit..
Don’t forget, he has played that geeky boy in “A bad mothers handbook” and i thought he pulled it off well!

    • Rosalie's Pain says:

I agree 100%. I think Michael Welch would be an outstanding Spider Man. He is an all American boy next door kind of guy. His face got a little round for New Moon, but I’m sure he can hit the gym and take care of that. I actually think he would be better than Toby to be quite honest. Check out his “how you liking the rain girl” line in Twilight. LOL. There is also Joan of Arcadia, he was great there too. Anyhow, I think he would make the best Spidey ever. I hope he gets the part.

OMG LOVE LOVE LOVE Mike Welch <3 YES Mike Welch would definitely be perfect for the part. He's tremendously cool, down-to-earth and has a perfect hilarious natural sense of humor. Love him.

  • HPFangirl71 says:

I have to agree that Michael would be closer to a younger Tobey Mcguire and that he is that boy next door type!! I am just saddened that McGuire is leaving the franchise cuz I absolutely adore him!!

  • AlyssaAshley says:

Yeah I agree with Maya. I really don’t see Robert AT ALL as Spiderman. I KNOW of course he’d be great. Robert’s great in everything but I kinda don’t want to see Rob in another one of these kind of franchises (He already has Twilight). He has greater movies that he could do because he’s an extremely intelligent actor.

  • Christina says:

You know, visually speaking, I could see that working. The unfortunate thing about this franchise is that the supporting characters (like Bella’s friends) don’t really have that much dialogue which equals less time to really share their acting ability (or lack thereof) with the audience. I am really proud of Anna Kendrick’s and Ashley Greene’s success, and am excited to see who the other breakout stars will be from this franchise – but I am also skeptical. (Just saying.)

I would give him a chance though, completely.
It seems a lot of the supporting cast has indy movies coming out this year – I will be watching those too.

  • Christina says:

Oh, I think that saying RP would play Spiderman was an April Fool’s joke or something too.

That would not work at all.

  • Amanda B. says:

Honestly, I have heard both the Rob & Michael W. suggestions, and I think they’re both a little far-fetched. As for whether Michael would be good for the role, of course he would. He’s adorable-geeky . . . Much like Peter Parker. I think, though, that Michael W. can probably smell the stink coming off of these reboots from a mile away. I don’t foresee this going well, to be honest with you. Tobey M. made the series work, and the reboot will not fare as well as the Batman series has (for a whole host of reasons). Ultimately, though, I think MTV threw MW’s name in the pot because he’s a nice kid, and he’s been a champ where their coverage is concerned . . . We’ll see, I guess.

  • Ciera says:

I hate to be teh downer here but i don’t think he would be great. There needs to be someone a littel younger looking and less roundness in the face. I’m just being logical. Micheal has great acting skills and his next moive lokks really great. This jsut isn’t the role for him.

  • Meredith says:

I like him, but as Spiderman?? No. No no no no. Just…. NO. I don’t like it.

  • dana says:

It would be an unfortunate career move for Rob.

  • Maelina says:

I don’t think anyone should touch the role for at least a couple of years, Tobey is the only Spider-Man the fans want and except. It would be a very stupid career move for any actor to make, Rob certainly wouldn’t do it and I hope Michael neither.

  • Nat says:

DUHHH Mike Welch would be better!!! like, i luvv luv luv Rob, but he just doesnt fit the part….if they would consider Mike, then they SHOULD cast him there, but if they dont even know him, then the role should just go to someone else….unless they really will cancel the movie…but y isnt the original dude not in it anymore??

  • Kim says:

Mike Welch? I can’t see that. Toby Maquire owns that part. He is the one that made those movies.

  • michelle matus says:

I agree with most people. they need to consider someone who can not only look the part but act the part. Peter Parker is described in the comic books as small, thin….geeky. Tobey was so visually perfect and hes a great actor. It will be hard to fill those shoes. They may be better off with a “no name” actor. sooo yeah, good luck with that!

  • Katy says:

yeah i totally agree! RP would be a bad spiderman, mike maybe, but he looks too young! ugh i cant believe toby isnt doing it! regardless of who they get it will never be the same…. :(

  • Selene says:

It would be interesting to see a twilight human be spiderman.

  • Kim says:

If you think that Robert can’t do nerdy boy next door then you need to see the movie How To Be. He played a nerdy kid, in this one, and pulled it off perfectly and with great humor. He was sweet, funny, goofy, and altogether loveable, and charming as nerdy Art. There was no trace of Edward Cullen. He has proven that he can do sweet and nerdy, as well as dark and brooding, and all of those characteristics are important to pull off Spiderman.

That said, I don’t really want to see him do it. Because, I don’t want him to be caught up in another franchise, Plus, Tobey owns that part and anyone following, in those shoes, will forever be compared to him. I don’t want to see that happen to Robert.

    • Maya says:

Yes! I agree! I forgot about “How to be” but that movie is a great example of Rob’s acting abilities too!! He also won me over in “Little Ashes”. No Edward there either!!

  • M.P. says:

If I have to choose, yeah, Mike Welch all the way… but c’mon!!!! It’s another franchise… I don’t think if this is a clever move, besides, whatever actor (well known or unknown) will play this part will be always compared with Tobey… IMO, the one who’ll always be my spiderman.

  • cmomma says:

I don’t care if Daniel Day-Lewis were playing Spiderman, NO TOBEY, NO MONEY FROM ME! This is an abomination! Spiderman 4 will be just as awful (for me) as S. Darko was for Richard Kelly. My love for Spiderman culminated from my love for Tobey Maguire.

Anyways… there are more important, and more devastating events occurring in the world. As many of you know, there is a crisis going on in the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country. Please text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross.

  • Magiclily says:

i love mike, but i wish for someone who looks like a younger version of tobey mcguire….

  • safina says:

It would be really interesting to see how Mike would turn out as Spider-Man.
