Robert Pattinson:Times Live Interview

Robert Pattinson talked to The Times Live about his changing life, and what it’s like to be still just an ordinary English bloke at heart.

“When he read the first script, he had no idea how to play it. “I thought Bella, the heroine, would be a damsel in distress and I’d have to be the alpha-male hero type, so I thought I was never going to get it. But then they cast Kristen Stewart and she’s not really like that, so I realised there was a different way to play Edward, to show his vulnerability.” Could he get trapped and find it hard to move on to different sorts of roles?

“It worries me, because the whole Twilight thing keeps getting bigger and bigger, and now it’s so big, even my own ego can’t cope with it. A certain amount of success you can mentally deal with, but there’s a point where you think: ‘Jesus Christ, what is this? I’m not that great!’ I just wanted to make an American film, and I wanted it to be relatively good and to be good in it. I have never pushed to do anything . As soon as you start going to the gym every day and try to look like a movie star, you’re going down a worrisome track.” He laughs. “Being an English guy, you get a lot more breaks. You’re allowed to look a little worse. It’s that thing about English teeth.”

He’s right about Kristen. When I first read the books I wasn’t crazy about Bella, it took some time for me to see her quiet yet powerful strength of mind. Kristen really brings that to the fore, for me anyway.

    • Are you joking.... says:

Kristen brings nothing to that role..she shows no emotions and definitely cannot act…my personal thought you need to picture someone else in this role it can be so much better…

Aww, its okay to have negative opinions, but lets not hate!!!

I personally think she improved so much from Twilight to New Moon. I feel like she really understands the character.

It makes me a little sad when I hear Rob say he doesn’t understand why we like the books/movies so much… I can understand that the story might not appeal to him like it does to a lot of us fans, but I wish he was a little more enthusiastic about it. :-(

      • Linda says:

You are way off base about Kristen. If you say she can not act they you are by far in the minority. Not matter what you may think she has been reviewed well in almost every film she has made. And she has made several. From Panic room to Speak, Into the Wild, Adventureland and many others and almost always her performance is reviewed very well as well as the film. In fact check out the reviews for her new film “The Yellow Handkerchief” with William Hurt (Oscar Winner). If you notice the reviews for Twilight and New Moon focus on the Directors problems and are not often critical of Kristed. Why? Because most of them have seen her other work and some have said they are surprised this franchise was able to attract such a gifted young talent. So back off and get your facts straight.

I agree actually – there is some quality of Bella in the book which annoyed me quite alot and is prominent throughout the Saga (some self absorption or like said, damsel in distress quality) however, with Kristen Stewart playing Bella in the movie, the more liked qualities of Bella are brought out; i.e. her strength of mind and innocent, but wise sense.

  2. K says:

I liked Kristens acting far better in New Moon than Twilight….Bella wasn’t my favorite character either (I wanted to shake Bella more than once). I sincerely hope they enjoy this ride they are on, it comes but once in a life time, ask ‘Lord of the Rings’ cast…as well as ‘Star Wars’, (Harry Potter crew still at it) but that would be my advise to all of them also. This is because of the beloved books in all cases….so sit back and soak it all in. I know they will be successful in other endeavers, that is not what I am saying….I just know its rare to end up in something with this global appeal once, not to mention twice. ENJOY!

  3. Alicia says:

I think Kristen’s performance is much better in New Moon. Everyone I’ve seen it with agrees. Goodness, how I grew tired of her gasping and eye flutterings in the first movie (others I’ve seen this movie with note that she does this as well as tosses her hair around in other movies, too). Glad to see she has improved. I think she makes for a much stronger Bella this go-round.

As with others here, there have been times I’ve wanted to smack Bella, oftentimes wondering what either guy sees in her. But I think for me, too, Kristen’s performance this time actually seems to bring out some of Bella’s best character traits: quiet strength and resilience.

I’m with K though. I hope New Moon cast members are enjoying the ride (as much as they can without being hunted like prey). Stuff like this does not happen often. Enjoy the success!

  4. KelMorian says:

Well Bella in the book is one boring and for me annoying character…so I understandable that Kristen could not show her (if any) acting skills,
