I think the scene was perfect. Emmett acted like Emmett should act totally inappropriate (older woman comment) and childlishy excited (already put it in your car)..jasper and rosalie were appropriately standoff-ish and awkward since neither really approve of this whole human knowing about us thing and human so unnecessarily close to vamps thing. And Alice, Carlisle and Esme had the right excitement one would expect considering they know she really doesn’t want a bday party in the first place. Carlisle and Esme are understanding and downplay their gift and Alice is Alice an unstoppable party force.
And Edward is just perfect…enough said
It almost looks like he’s reminding her to be nice and that the party is not just for her with the kiss on her forehead in the pic Alice makes them take and it looks like Bella is grimacing cause she knows she just has to endure

ITA. Compared to all the other clips we’ve seen, this was the worst one. Everyone looks so darned awkward and gloomy for a birthday party. It’s more like a funeral. The acting looks bad as a standalone. Edward looks constipated. What gives ? I’m hoping scenes before this one will explain this strange and awkward take.

I agree with you 100%…I think most of these guys wouldn’t get it because they haven’t read the books…and I suppose you wouldn’t I mean they left loads out in the first film…so give them a bit of credit…they just haven’t read the books

It’s so annoying how just because someone doesn’t like the scene…it automatically means they didn’t read the book. People need to stop jumping to conclusions. People can have their own opinion and it may be different than your own. That doesn’t mean you know more than them. Simmer.

By the way I agree with you. I have no problem with either the scene and the way it progresses/flows or the way the actors are portraying their characters. I like the awkwardness of the scene.
Bella doesn’t want to be there, Edward is trying to make it less of a trial for Bella, Emmett’s good natured brotherly ribbing of Edward(gotta love Kellan), Alice full of bubbly enthusiasm, Rosalie full of herself and indifference, Carlisle and Esme ever gracious and thoughtful and Jasper, oh Jasper trying ever so hard to fit in and surpress everything he’s been for so long. The scene looks to be set up perfectly for sll he** and chaos to break loose..

I think that everyone should re-read this part. I watched it – was kinda not feeling it then I re-read it and then watched again. I can see all of it so clear now. Its dead on whats going on. I agree! I loved The older woman stuff and also the don’t hate on the truck bit! Just made this!

Yeah, I think the rest of the clips have been better since you don’t really need a build up as much to make an action clip look good. When it’s just everyone standing in a room together…you kinda need the before and after scene to make it complete.
Not only that but Bella didn’t want a party and was only putting up with it for Alice and then couldn’t stand how far she went…plus she didn’t want gifts at all!
I’m probably going to get bashed for this and hoping not, but, here’s my opinion. I think they all acted accordingly to how they did in the book for this scene. Rosalie is upset that she’s not the center of attention and Bella is, Carisle and Esme are trying to not crowd around Bella, knowing how she feels, but wanting to celebrate her birthday, Emmett is, well emmett lol, Jasper is trying to control himself and fit in, Alice is all bubbly, Bella is trying to have fun, or pretend to enjoy herself and Edwad is seemingly annoyed because he knows Bella didn’t want a party and said no presents but her wishes were ignored and pushed onto her anyway. I found it odd that in Twilight and first reading of New Moon I liked Alice a lot and Rosalie very little. After re-reading New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, and seeing the movie and this clip, I like Rosalie more and Alice comes off as very pushy, for as sweet as she is. Even Edward comments ‘How can someone so small, be so annoying?’ I adore Alice, but she pushes her way alot and tosses a guilt trip to help get that way. The scene is good, the movie looks to be great, the scene is supposed to be played arkward.

Yup! and labeled crazy, obsessed, and we are usually completely misunderstood etc.—that’s okay by me I’ve gotten used to it. Here at the Lex. (and a few other sites I visit) I’m with friends. I’m psyched to be in the company of so many others who are as jazzed about the books being translated and brought to life on screen.
The Twilight Saga is something that means a lot to me–can’t put it into words or sum it up.
No one else has to understand or get it.
edward says this about alice in an endearing manner.. jokingly. alice is my favorite. it’s alice’s “pushy” manner that makes everything work out in the end. since she can see the future, she knows shes right. even down to the lingerie she packed for bella.. bella ended up appreciative she had them. i loved how she kept bugging edward about being able to finally speak to bella and become friends with her as she saw in teh future she would be. heck, she was integral to edward giving in to his feelings for bella in the first place.
rosalie was still selfish until the very end. her helping bella was all about herself. that never changed.

Btw, Edward probably looks awkward because he is already thinking about leaving Bella so she’s safer and when Jasper attacks her, it kind of gives him all the proof he needs to leave her.

Bella’s now 18 and Edward is 17 so she’s technically older than him, glad to see they finally got some of Emmetts sense of humor in there. The only thing I don’t like is that Edward and Bella seem uneasy around each other, not the way is was in the book by this point.
I don’t think they look uneasy. If I remember correctly, they kind of argue right before going to the party about Bella not wanting gifts. Doesn’t she hint that what she really wants is to be immortal? And Edward gets upset about that. I think all of the characters look great. There were a lot of emotions in this scene in the book and it looks like CW captured them here.
yeah.. you didnt read the book. edward was not thinking about leaving bella until jasper attacks her. he only thinks to leave her because he put her in danger once again.

I don’t care how Jasper looks, to me he is perfect. The Birthday scene was well done, in my opinion. Bella did not want a Birthday party, which is why the Birthday scene is akward, besides (in the books)the Cullens never really threw a party, much less a Birthday party. The last party they ever threw was for Emmett’s birthday, which was decades ago. So, the Cullens don’t really know how to “act” during a party, they never saw the point to celebrate birthdays or holidays, because they never aged. So, Bella’s birthday is “special” to them because she is still human and can therefore still grow into a full-grown woman.
It looks like they went the direction of showing how awkward and uncomfortable the whole thing is for them. All of them are smelling her blood and trying to surpess their vampire urges, Alice is forcing them all to get into happy birthday mode, Rosalie resents Bella, and to top if all off Edward knows what they’re all (with one exception of course) thinking.
But all in all I think it looks very well done.
Also, the editing looks so much better. I like how, instead of using quick cuts, they focus on scenes a bit more and let us take in the scenery.
hahaha LOL i love Emmett! for some reason I have a much better feeling about the outcome of New Moon than Twilight. When I watched the Twilight trailers I was like “that’s not supose to happen in that scene!…was that ever part of the book?” twilight changed in a bad way. New Moon I think is alot more closer to the book, and some parts changed for the better of it.

Cute clip. They managed to include a lot from the book in that short scene. You can see how excited Alice is, how upset Rosalie is, that Esme is kind and motherly, and how fun-loving Emmett is. I’m more interested in the scene where Carlisle cleans Bella’s cut, though. I hope it’s very similar to the book.

I love Emmett. Period. Kellan rocks! LOL! Though I love it when he goes to insult the truck and bella says “hey no hating my truck” the smirk on edward’s face was great. Also was great the look he gave Em when he made the older woman crack. Lol, Rob and Kellan do a great job. LOL! Loves it!!!
It’s a relief to see that they’ve shown Emmett’s sense of humor. You didn’t get to see his goofy side in Twilight (or anyone else’s for that matter).
You must of missed the goofy wave with the butcher’s knife that Emmett gave Bella while standing in the kitchen in the Twilight movie. I love that part with Emmett!
No, I didn’t miss it.
We might see him wave a knife at Bella and think “that’s such an Emmett thing to do”, but those that haven’t read the books wouldn’t automatically see that as an indication of the goofy person he is. Plus, he only had about four lines in Twilight, so it’s hard to get an idea of what a person is like from that. So I was just saying that now that the Cullens have more dialogue, people (who haven’t read the books) will finally get an idea of their personalities and how they interact with each other.
I love Emmett and his line made me smile!!
THe clip looks really good and remember it is taken out of context so it will be weird for us and in the book it said they hadn’t had a birthday since Emmetts in the 30s or 40s so they are out of practice.

I have the same problem. I SHOULD stop watching these clips, but they’re like a drug. I hope that I can still disappear into this movie without being reminded of all the clips I’ve seen.
Yeah I wish so many clips weren’t being released because we’ve seen small segments of almost every major scene already. However, I can’t not watch the clips because then I will become anxious. November 20th is close enough anyway, hopefully they won’t show too many more lol.

After all, the kiss takes place outside instead of her bedroom so they may have cut that whole section out. I hope not. They’re lucky to have an actor who can actually play piano. They might as well use him!
I’m not sure if they kept the CD in. I won’t be too disappointed if they don’t. With an adaptation, I never walk in expecting every plot point that I liked in the books to be fully covered.
I don’t expect it to be exactly the same, but the way that Stephenie has written these books means that removing one thread often affects other threads in the storyline.
No, it wasn’t Edward’s present. It was the plane tickets to Florida. Esme is saying you’re a little pale lately, it means these are tickets to sunny Florida.
We were talking about in the book. We get that in the movie she cuts her finger on the plane tickets. I also love how Bella looks annoyed at their comment about her paleness, like “you should talk”, and Edward is smirking at their attempt at a joke.
Perhaps they probably added the Rosalie giving Bella a necklace part to skip the Edward CD part I guess.

to all those ppl that are saying they arent gonna watch anymore clips cuz its gonna ruin the movie, i have to ask….how many times did you watch twilight?? do you really think seeing a few clips and trailers are gonna spoil the movie??? I know on the 20th im gonna see it at least twice. once at midnite and again later with my daughter. everything ive seen so far is only making me more excited to see it.
It’s not that I think it will ruin the movie if I see any more clips (and I WILL see more clips, because I can’t help myself). It was just that I don’t want to be sitting there going “Oh, I saw this part”, “I saw this part too”. I just hope I can forget all that and watch it as a completed movie and not as a collection of clips. Either way I will still love it!

I don’t know how my original comment keeps getting misinterpreted. I wasn’t complaining in any way, shape or form. I was talking about how my brain works, and how sometimes I can’t shut it off even when I try. Like when I saw the behind the scenes of Bella’s near miss with the van. To this day the side of that van looks completely fake no matter how much I try to forget it. I was talking about ME, not about some imaginary grudge I have against Summit for releasing these clips.

My guess is that it might be in some way connected to the “palette” that Chris has worked from. He said that when Bella is with Edward she is dressed in cool colors like blue and gray to “show her affiliation to the Cullens”, and then when they leave she switches to Earth colors to match the wolf pack. (Then she switches back to the cooler colors when Edward returns.) Bearing this in mind I think that maybe Bella has a green cake and a green dress as a way of showing her as being separate from the Cullens.

That depends on how much it cut Bella’s finger, which we barely see. I had a friend who accidentally cut his finger, and an edge slid down too much when he accidentally cut the finger. The amount of blood was roughly the same as what we see in the clip.
Excatly, most papercuts don’t bleed. Some actually do if they are deep enough though. I’m about as accident prone as Bella is and have gotten my fair share of papercut from paper, cardboard, putty knives, peghooks…yeah I wok at a home improvement store…hit my head numerous times, had a lightening rod whack me in the head that a customer was buying, scanning gun fall of the coutner to my head, a customer knock me off the last step of a ladder… *sighs* lol everyday i get a new bruise and forget how I got them by the time I notice them.
