Robert Pattinson: Total Film Interview

Posted by Twilight_News - 21/10/09 at 09:10 am

Robert Pattinson sat down with Total Film to give them some insight into New Moon and his life.

Total Film: What sort of arc does Edward go through this time?

“He’s always talking in the first one. “I need to make the right decision. I need to do stuff for you, for you, for you.” And he makes a decisive move, which is to leave her, and he completely believes it’s for her own good.

But in his heart, he obviously realises it’s completely wrong. And it takes him the whole movie to realise the profundity of his mistake. So that’s what his arc his.

The world forces him to realise he needs to be with Bella, and there’s no way around it”

“But in his heart, he obviously realises it’s completely wrong. And it takes him the whole movie to realise the profundity of his mistake. So that’s what his arc his.”

    Agreed. Thanks, Rob. :)

  • Eclisse says:

What’s with the fun first picture in the interview, where they are wearing white?

    • Mel says:

It’s meant to be one of Bella’s dreams (in the movie each one is different). I guess that would be their life if she had been born in the 1900’s.

I hope they do another scene like that for Eclipse. (When Edward is explaining about how he would have courted her properly in his time, and she imagines herself dressed like Anne of Green Gables.)

  • Matt says:

Apparently, it’s a flashback sequence. It’s probably Bella imagining her ideal life with Edward.

  • Cathryn says:

I feel weird right now. Many months ago, fans have been angsting about November not coming sooner. Thank God I’m still sane…I think I am :D Bring on the new interviews, we are so ready for them!

  • Jo Ann says:

Honestly, I would like to hear, just once that he is glad he got the role rather than…I’m contracted, I have no choice. It bugs me to no end. I don’t want to watch a movie when I know the lead actor is only in it because he had no choice!

    • bird says:

at the end of the day, it’s still a job. none of us would work our jobs if we weren’t getting paid.

    • sillygirl says:

I like his honesty. At least he doesn’t sound phoney. I could care less if he completely hated the entire story line. As long as he protrays his part properly, in the end that’s all that matters.

    • Pamela says:

I truly don’t think he meant it that way. I think he was just stating a mere fact. From past interviews, you know that he puts his heart & soul into portraying Edward as accurately as possible. What more can we ask for?

    • Mel says:

I didn’t read it as he has no choice but to do the movies. I read it as he has no choice but to be stuck in a Twilight box at the moment. As in, he is only going to be seen as Edward by some people until the series is finished, but he has no choice because the movies are all back to back. I think he’s just being honest. All actors are worried about typecasting. That’s why Kristen picked The Runaways script.

  • Matt says:

I guess that’s his British way of matter-of-factly talking about things. I don’t think that means he’s not excited. He’s just telling the truth: he does have a contract, and they do need to make the films before he starts to age. It’s not like Harry Potter, since Edward isn’t supposed to physically age.

I agree, Jo Ann, to some extent that it is a bit crass to “bite the hand that feeds you”. We didn’t force Rob to try out for the part; we just love the story. And it seems to me, there should be a show of some respect for the huge constituency that he now has. He could play nice and at least speak highly of the opportunites this film and this role have gotten him, regardless of how he views this role. Yes, the trade off is quite severe, having all your life open for the world to see and “cousins” coming out of the woodwork to peddle your name for a buck must be taxing in a way most of use will never understand. However, this is his job and hopefully his craft. So while i can understand that he doesn’t want to be pigeon-holed as solely this type of character and excluded from future opportunities because of that stigma, there should still exist some respect for the people who have propelled you to the fame you now possess. The fame that allows you to practice the art you say you love, the fame that pays your bills and helps your family, and the fame that has afforded your friends some of the same luxuries; whether you enjoy it all the time, or not.

  • Karen says:

Did everyone notice him say he has one more to do?…Sumitt can dance around all they want to, they would be fools not to do Breaking Dawn.

    • Julianne says:

Thank you!!! Yes, that’s what I was fixated on, that he said he’s done w/ the third film by October then one more to go…hello??? I honestly don’t think he’s biting any hand, he IS in a Twilight box for now, he’s obligated. Nothing negative there, just fact, and that’s how I took it.

Loved the interview and loved hearing what I take as confirmation of Breaking Dawn!! :)

  • Donna says:

Hmmm….first let me say….I love Rob!

And I’m not a screaming fan girl either. I just adore his ordinary-ness! (Is that a word? LOL) He’s such a breath of fresh air compared to the prima donna actors and actresses that we see all the time. I’m sure he wants to do different things besides Twilight, but he’s contractually obligated to finish this. That’s probably what he meant. I don’t think it means that he hates what he’s doing. Any actor wants to branch out before he gets typecast into a particular role. I just know that I can’t wait to see him in Remember Me and the period film he’s making next. He’s a diamond in the rough–a beginning actor who has the potential to become really good if he keeps his head!

  • Elle says:

I’m sure Rob is overwhelmed with the chaos in his life now. Who wouldn’t be. The entire madness of it all, but I also believe that he is extremely greatful for the chance to be in these films. One has to remember that he went through some very hard words and criticism when he landed the role. I just hope he realizes that not everyone is a jerk and trying to find fault. They need a better life apparently. Always a friend

  • Gaby says:

I love Rob and I think it’s understandable that he says he’s on contract, his life changed drastically once Twilight came out and he wasn’t expecting that. However I think it’s important to him that he understands the character, he has gone to great lengths to portray him right. Also out of all the actors when I read his interviews I feel like he really GETS the books at the level of the fans, not simply as a job. He also used to say that he read the books really fast because he wanted to know what happened. I don’t think that he hates the story or even the job, but the truth of the matter is that people harass him and he’s probably hoping it will die down once it’s over with. Jo Anne and responders I respect your opinions, I feel that way about Kristen Stewart, but I feel like maybe you need to view it with more sympathy and look up older interviews on youtube.

  • Helen says:

I can’t believe rob pattinson was in Guisborough of all places. That is only 5mins drive from my parents house!

  • arazcal says:

Ya gotta love the guy. He shoots straight from the hip and has absolutely no filter. If only there were more people who followed that rule–there’d be far less B.S. and subterfuge in the world…

My favorite part of that interview= how his mom won’t cut him any slack and believes the gossip no matter what. Someone has to keep him on his toes and grounded! The man looks to be quite a mischievious imp on a good day..a good soul

    • janelene says:

Another instance which totally endeared him to me:

When he was at the Oscars on the red carpet and the Sky TV (UK) person asked him to say something for the folks back home, his immediate and spontaneous response was a cheery “HELLO MUM!!”….REALLY sweet! :)

  • safina says:

I love the picture where Kristen and Rob are both in white. It’s so fairytale-like.
