Peter Facinelli: Carlisle Takes Preparation

Larry Carroll of MTV interviewed Peter Facinelli and asked him if he could do in character one of Carlisle’s signature lines. Peter, who takes his job really seriously, turned Larry down. He explained it wasn’t personal, but it wasn’t possible:

“You know, I don’t even know if I can do Carlisle on the spot like that… Really, in order to play those roles, you have to get into the whole spirit of the character. I have to have on my white makeup and my contact lenses, otherwise it just doesn’t work. Otherwise, it looks like Peter Facinelli trying to play something; it’s weird. But I could say that’s one of my favorite lines from “New Moon”: “Like everything else in life, I just had to decide what to do with what I was given.” But that’s me saying it, not Carlisle. [In "New Moon"] Carlisle says it, and it’s very Carlisle-esque.”

  1. I totally and completely understand where Peter’s coming from. I am that way, as well, I have to be in costume and have some time with my character to be able to do something in that character. However, because I’ve also been trained in improv, I probably could pull something out of my butt easier.

  2. Oh man…that line that Carlisle says is so unbelievably great. He says that line to Bella while he sews up her arm after the infamous birthday party scene.

I remember getting goosebumps while reading it.

  3. i love that line too. i love carlisle.

  4. I also love that line. It’s so truly Carlisle-esque.
And I have to ask something that’s totally off topic: Did everyone forget which day it is? It’s September 10th, so it’s Renesmee’s birthday!
    Happy Birthday to Dearest Nessie!

  5. HOLY FREAKING CRUD!! THAT’S MY FAVORITE LINE! My friend was making a vase for me on my b-day and I asked her to put the exact quote on the vase!!! You know what they say, great minds think alike!! ;)

  6. Wow, that’s one of my favorite Carlisle lines as well! I’m so glad he insisted upon putting it in that scene. I can’t wait to see it! :D

And I totally understand where he’s coming from, with the whole in-character thing. I’m sure he could have done a spontaneous impression of it on some level. But since professional actors usually take some time to “get into character” before doing their scenes, it feels awkward to them… Kind of like how the Wolf Pack actors don’t like having to growl on cue for interviews, haha. (Even Jamie was laughing before he did his line as Caius, lol.)

Anyway, as always, we love Peter! Can’t wait to see him in New Moon. :D

  7. I love that line! I think it tells a lot about Carlisle’s character…and Peter had to ask to have it put in? I know actions speak louder than words, but really! Does Melissa Rosenberg even understand the characters she is writing about? Stupid question, I know, but you’d think she’d learned something from the last movie.

  8. That’s like the line in Lord of the Rings, when Gandalf says to Frodo in Moria, “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”
