Borders Goes For Teen Market

In response to realizing that teens are now buying more books than ever, and realizing that many adults buy YA books, Borders has decided to change their approach a bit. Publishers Weekly covers the the change over which was in part inspired by the reaction to the Twilight Saga success.

“Popoff wants the teen section to move beyond books. Graphic novels and manga titles will be displayed immediately adjacent to the dedicated teen boutique, which is also next to genre fiction. Popoff said Borders has been seeing more crossover of adults interested in teen novels (such as the Twilight series), while some teens have shown an increased interest in categories such as romance.”

The trend isn’t limited to the US. In the UK they are reporting childrens book sales are up 8%.

great! it was time someone realized that… Some of just carry our little children inside, even though our age (I´m 23 and proud to real teen novels with meaning and heart)

  2. Rocio says:

apparently I can´t spell… I wanted to say “some of US…” and that I´m proud to read teen novels…Anyway, I should practice my English or spelling, ha :)

  3. Jules says:

31 (you heard me!) and proud to read teen novels (with meaning and heart as Rocio puts it). :) :)

  4. Becki says:

I’m 31 as well and last year I spent over $3000 on YA books. I teach 8th grade, so YA is pretty much all I read. There are some really great authors and stories in the YA section now that didn’t seem to be there when I was a kid. I’m glad Borders will be giving them the attention they deserve.

  5. Marley says:

yeah Im 25 and only read YA books, they are just more carefree then the older aimed books.

  6. Nichole says:

I find this concept weird. After all, Harry Potter and Twilight were, according to their authors, never intended to be published as “Young Adult” reading material. The market just advertised them that way since both main characters are young adults. But can anyone honestly say they feel these books are YA, when so many adults love and appreciate them? So now everyone thinks that the YA/Child field is the greatest genre out there… well I’m sorry, I don’t. From what I can tell, only HP and Twilight are excellent “YA” stories for someone my age.. the rest are too childish.

    • Mel says:

I completely agree with you, Nichole. I can’t help but get my back up when I hear people refer to Twilight as being for younger readers. Stephenie herself has said that the fact that teenagers started reading the series made it harder for her to write the books the way she wanted. I can understand why it is so popular amongst that age group, but you only have to read the types of comments that they make about the main characters to see that they don’t fully understand the story.

  7. sparktastic says:

That’s what a good book does though…breaks down those genre walls that so many are afraid to climb over! I ventured into the YA genre a bit since loving and reading both HP and the Twilight series…I’ve found some that I loved and some that were just way to young for me (28). You just never know until you read…

  8. safina says:

I’m 15 and I obviously read YA books, but I got more into romance novels.

  9. Cassey says:

That’s so true we don’t have that store where I live. but when I shop for books I shop for romances.

  10. CiRi says:

Yeah.Teenager’s scare the living crap outta me,they could care less about the deep meaning of things. They have messed up the true meaning of the Twilght saga. Its too bad. Its a big franchise that nobody takes seriously and its becoming a huge joke to the people who dont know anything about it and think its lame just because of the movies and how much the tweens and teenyboppers react and treat rob and kristen and the rest of the cast. I feel bad for them in a way they are seen as just a novelty and are seen only as the characters they play to make money off of them. Showbiz is weird. And the way they treat their actors like a meat market is discusting.

Speak for yourself. Maybe when you were a teenager you were obnoxious (which leads to being a rather self-satisfied adult, eh?) but not all of us are.
