The Last Airbender, the action movie based on the anime series and co-staring Jackson Rathbone, opens just days after Eclipse’s June 30, 2010 release. The Last Airbender just released its first teaser trailer. So what do you think Airbender or Eclispe, which will rule the 2010 summer box office?

Its simply a cartoon, if you want go by the definition of anime.
Simply put it would be called “American Anime”. The complexity of the drawing and coloring resembles similar to Japanese anime, however the style isn’t officially made by Japanese artists throughout the series.
That being said I always loved the series. It was adorable and fun to watch although they left you hanging in the end. The trailer looked really well. You cannot expect the movie makers to follow precisely with a book or a cartoon series. I wish people who stop to realize that. There is only certain ways a character can be made up, there is only a limited time the length of the movie could be made and it’s not like you can find a VERY similar person for a live action movie to be exact to the animation.
I cannot wait to see how Jackson portrayed his character. I’m sure he did great. Cannot wait to see the movie.
not sure what you meant by “they left you hanging”… the series ended with aang beating the fire lord, zukko beating azula/taking over the fire nation and aang and katara kissing/together… did you miss the final episodes?

Avatar was actually not done in Japanese style at all. It was Chinese. It’s an American cartoon, but it used the Chinese language (the fish Tui & La, it’s Push & Pull in Mandarin), a lot of the mythology, and the bending are all Chinese as well (Waterbending is based on Tai Chi, Earthbending is Hung Gar – Kung Fu, Firebending is Northern Shaolin – Kung Fu, & Airbending is Baguazhang).
It’s not even trying to be Anime. Not all asian style cartoons are Japanese.

there’s no right answer to that question. it’s produced, written & directed by americans, animated mostly by korean studios. and voiced originally in english. it’s heavy east asian influences in terms of clothing, martial art style philosophy, mysticism
and also the fact that all text appearing within the series is ancient mandarin can confuse most into believing it is an completely japanese product.
the odd coincidence is the three seasons it consists off, are called books. i.e; Season1-book1:water
Season2-book2:earth
Season3-book3:fire
Saraness….anime is short for animation…. no where did the twilight lex post say avatar was specifically “japanese anime”
actually “anime” was a term coined specifically for japanese animation. there was also the term “japanimation”, but that one didn’t really take off as well
“Anime” simply means “animation” in Japan. They even call Disney stuff anime.
Saraness, they call Avatar anime in Japan too. It’s referred to as such in the Japanese-language Wikipedia article, among other things.
I’m a huge fan of the Avatar series, long before Twilight, so the fact that Jackson, who plays my favorite character in Twilight, will be in a movie based off of my favorite TV show is totally beyond awesome! I’m not sure if I will like the movie or not, but I will be seeing it, and not only because Jackson will be in it. ;D
I was a little upset they didn’t show any other character, I really wanted to see what Jackson looked like as Sokka.

Ditto! My boyfriend and I joke that our love of “Avatar” is how we knew we were meant for each other. It is such an unbelievably good cartoon, and the idea of a movie just makes us incredibly nervous. It’s completely gratuitous because I really feel like the cartoon left nothing lacking, but seeing it live action could be fun. Also, I really don’t like M. Night, but I suppose I’m going to give this a chance. I have complete faith that Rathbone is gunna rock it.
Ahh, so was I! Well, up till you said he’s playing Sokka,I didn’t know what role he was playing, but that’s amazing!
I was a big fan of this show, and wasn’t sure how they were gonna do the movie considering the series took forever to finish, though it was REALLY good.
Between both of them, donno who would do the best. Eclipse has a larger following, but Avatar is JUST as good!
I think New Moon will determine that, if New Moon makes a bang, then so will Eclipse and the buzz will just buildd…Let’s see (:

Considering Eclipse hasn’t even started filming yet and the Last Airbender has a trailer, I would say if anyone moved to an earlier date it would need to be Airbender. But of the two, I totally think Eclipse would win out.

i dont kno i mean it depends on how well new moon does but i personally am a huge avatar fan and geek and i love it as much as the twilight novels. So far the twilight movies arnt that great and the trailer for avatar looks odd so we will see

AHHHHHHH Would I be shot by everyone on here if I said I am looking forward to this movie more than Eclipse? LOL. I have been an Avatar fan a lot longer than I’ve been into Twilight, but I can’t wait for both movies!!

definitely eclipse! i mean im a huge fan of the avatar cartoon.. but seeing that trailer totally threw me off! i don’t mean to be to be offensive to anyone!.. but i always imagined Aang to be an asian monk..?!? and seeing that he’s not kinda makes me a little disappointed :\ and Dev Patel playing Zuko is ehhh for me.
Hmm… I’ve been a fan of Avatar from the beginning (meaning waaaaay before Twilight) and yes it’s not an anime (for the people that doesn’t know the difference).
Anyway, before I get into a big rant about the difference between cartoons and anime, this trailer is not much to go by (there’s barely anything on it to make predictions about the film though I already saw something that they changed from the cartoon) and we don’t have anything from eclipse yet. Eclipse is going to be directed by a different person so it’s gonna be a bit different from Twilight and New Moon.
I’m definitely gonna watch both though! I mean come on! If I’m not watching it because of the original series then I’m watching it for Jackson Rathbone!!!
(I’m a bit disappointed with their casting of Zuko though! I’d say Taylor Lautner would be better suited for Zuko and I’m saying this because of his background in martial arts rather than because he’s playing a role in Twilight)
Looks GREAT! I love the music and the graphics are exceptional! Almost reminds me of pirates of the Caribbean (although it’s filmed in Greenland I think?). I just hope the acting is superb. That’s what completes a movie. How come his arrow head symbol isn’t blue like in the cartoon?
i know right? but in the Nickelodeon show, they mentioned it as a tattoo even tho it’s blue so i guess they were making it realistic in the film version.
Aside from the fact that it is an american cartoon series and not an anime, I think both of the movies will do extremely well. I am a huge fan of both Avatar and Twilight, although I have to admit it was Avatar that was my first “fandom,” and judging by the huge following that each series has garnered, and the wonderful quality of the film-making of each, I’d say that both movies will probably do well, and be almost neck-and-neck in the box office category.

That was so cool…for me I’m an equal fan of Avatar and Twilight…the fact that it is coming out close together and that there is a link to both movies just sweetens the deal so much more for me. And people…don’t get mad about people calling Avatar anime…it’s an easy mistake to make b/c most sites will say anime but it is actually American cartoon on Nickelodeon that is anime inspired.

DEVELOPED IN JAPAN doesnt nescessarily mean it is all Japanese, stop trying to sound smart by saying Its an americanized cartoon…
Aside from the The Last Airbender Trailer looks alright. I dont care about the release dates for either movie Im just glad they are not pushing it back like they did for Harry Potter 6 when Twilight came out
Harry Potter 6 didn’t get pushed to this year b/c of twilight. It’s coming out this year because this waner brothers didn’t have any good box office movies and last year they had already made lots of money with the dark knight.
Im not saying its Twilight’s fault im just blaming it….
They had only a small incentive to push it back to July because of the Box Office ratings attributed with the Dark Knight and when Twilight announced it’s Release Dates for the same time it made the Descision for WB much easier….

This looks lame!!! the trailer was a half minute shot of a moutain surrounded by water… how is that supposed to attract audiences! I want action not scenery! and really any anime or anime americanized tv show is retarded and any movie based off them failed…. a la Speed Racer Dragon Ball Z etc…

i always loved the avatar series, animated version. this guy doesn’t even resemble aang, and his arrow marks are kinda fade. though, i am excited to see Jackson Rathbone playing the all-time funny and crazy, Sokka.
oh, and if New Moon comes out GREAT, i, ofcourse, will be looking forward to the action-packed Eclipse. If not… I’d still see Eclipse.
I love this series sooo so so much. The casting in this film is very strange. But the bit of film looks amazing. Cant wait. Too long to wait ugggg.
I think it will all depend on David Slade. If he make a visually stunning Eclipse with great effects that stays true to the book, then it will win. However, lots of his recent comments and backtracking honestly have me nervous. If he turns out notthing but a second version of 30 Days of Night with RPattz in the Josh Hartnett role, not only will Avatar win, we won’t get BD.
A director is only as good as his material. Eclipse is the best of the books (or at least was my favorite, closely followed by Breaking Dawn). Melissa has done a great job at keeping to the original material, so it will be incredible. I’m really looking forward to seeing the backgrounds of the other vampires (Rosalie and Jasper) on the big screen and tons of action.

I am conflicted, but considering that movies that children can see have a trend of ruling the box office on opening weekend, I vote that Airbender will claim the crown.
Considering though… I think I will be conflicted and go see Airbender before Eclipse.

i have never watched avatar. but my 2 cents is that avatar might do better because more males might go for it.
Avatar was one of the best shows on Nick for a while; I’ll definintely be seeing it in theaters (I want to see Katara!). But I can almost guarentee I’ll be seeing Eclise opening night.

It is early to say which one since there is not preview of Eclipse…but so far the preview is not bad at all.
As much as a HUGE fan I am of Avatar, Eclipse will always win my heart. Though I garantee that I’ll see Avatar right after I see Eclipse. I mean, that trailer looked pretty KA. I loved it! XD
I wonder how the Eclipse trailer will compete with this one–and we have to consider the fans. Eclipse: a majority of girls and women (and twiguys). Avatar: young boys (and girls). I’m sure this will be an interesting battle to see play out.

I’ve seen all the episodes. So has my husband and a few other friends of ours so I have a feeling we’ll be watching both Eclipse and Avatar. No question about it. Next summer will be a great one!
I am soooooooooooo excited about Avatar!!!! I have to admit that I think Eclipse will win at the box office though, there has been too much controversy about the live action movie for it to do as well, which is very unfortunate because I know it’s going to rock!
The Avatar television series was going strong since 2005, and Twilight didn’t really get going ’till a bit later. Is it possible that The Last Airbender has accumulated a larger fanbase? (On FanFiction.net, the numbers seem almost equal.) I’m a fan of both series. As much as I’m rooting for Eclipse (and all the lovely Team Jacob action within it
), I’m kinda hoping The Last Airbender gets good numbers. Hey, the television series was open ended! If the movie turns out good, they might continue! And who wouldn’t like to see more?!

Wow, these posts have been quite an education. I’ve barely heard of Anime, never heard of Avatar (but thanks for the clarification), and never heard of this series…but I loved the trailer. Looks interesting. I’m excited for Jackson’t success, and thrilled to have more interesting stories to look forward to enjoying at the box office. Eclipse vs. Airbender? Meh? Looks like a win/win to me.
I love Avatar ever since it started. But i’m also a twilight fan. think Avatar will win in the box office, but lets not forget that the first part of the last harry potter comes out next year too. Not sure when exactly, does anyone know? because if it’s in june it’s going to win.

who decidided to put Avatar out the same time as Eclipse?! That wasn’t very smart! If Avatar is done already, release it Christmas time! That way New Moon has died done and Eclipse can’t steal it’s thunder. I love Avatar, but not as much as I love Twilight.

Maybe I’ll make some enemies by saying so, but I’m kind of done with EVERYTHING and it’s dog being compared to the whole Twilight deal. I understand Jackson is playing Sokka, but UGH I like these as separate movies, and Twilight has to touch everything! Frustrated. I’m just very frustrated.
But think about it guys: by the time Eclipse rolls around, this whole fiasco might have died down for some people. A lot of people, actually. So maybe Airbender will do better? Idk, I’m no movie critic.

i was a fan of the show but that certainly cant compete with any of the twilight movies its just not fair [for "The Last Airbender"] twilight is way bigger, in my eyes and probly many others, theres no doubt i will see “The Last Airbender” but i’ll see “Eclipse” way more times,its my favorite book =)))
first ofa ll the genres and the original mediums are completely different. so a comparative is irrational.plus a live action adaptation for airbender would be difficult for everyone. but i will say this, twilight maybe bigger but definitely not better. A:TLA’s symbolism, magnitude, character complexity(definitely made women look better than twilight) comprehensiveness through narative parallels for real world situations makes it in terms of plot elements simply a few clouds above. even most fans see it through the ‘it is a cartoon’ tinted glasses.
Eclipse will rule that summer…Its one of the best books in the series!! I can’t wait!!!!
Omg, cant wait.. I loved the cartoon series so much.. i wish they showed the other characters though, and i was worried the special effects were goin to be bad but i am pleased the special effects turned out okay..

The Last Airbender a.k.a. Avatar is actually very well known. It’s just because Avatar ended before Breaking Dawn came out, which is why it hasn’t been talked about much because the series is OVER.
after witnessing how horrible that crappy dragonball movie did, i might have to pass. and m. night shamalan hasn’t had the best track record as a director for the past few years, so i’m pretty doubtful.
however, i’m not sure how thrilled i am about eclipse yet either…. but i know i’ll probably go see it before i even think about seeing this movie. but, kudos to jackson for having 2 movies to possibly cash in on.
