Posted by Twilight_News - 13/05/09 at 07:05 amThere’s an essay contest being sponsored by author Brian Leaf. He has written a book called Defining Twilight that uses Twilight as a means to prep for SAT and other standardized tests. According to his site:
“Your job is to write a creative essay of no more than 1,000 words that incorporates these eight words.
You can write Twilight fan fiction or an entirely original essay.

- correct and effective use of the eight vocabulary words
- creativity
- clear communication of ideas
- correct syntax, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Categories: There are two age categories:
1) age 13 through age 15
2) age 16 through age 18
Prizes: One First-Prize winner and four Second-Prize winners will be selected from each age category based on the above judging criteria.
Each First-Prize winner will receive $500 and a copy of Defining Twilight

Who else is mad that there isn’t an older category? Do they think people stop liking Twilight at age 18? Hello! No!
Tell me about it!! I’m 24, Wheres the category for the older fans like me.I might just have to write one anyway and then award myself first place.lol.
They actually do have an older age group- if you go to Brian Leaf’s website for more details, they have a 19 and older age group that can apply. They just left it out here.
I saw this when I was looking for Vocabulary study guides for a huge test I’m taking this weekend.
I do have a problem with the contest though… for one… I’m 21 years old… I’m studying for the GED this weekend and its one of the tests that is covered in the book… also… a lot more people take the same tests listed on the cover who are over 18… It’s not fair to that person who should be allowed to participate in the contest.
I took the ACT at 19 and I plan on taking the SAT and CLEP exams within the next few months. And I would have loved to enter this contest… but alas I cannot due to age restriction.
There should be one more age category. 18-21
Especially since that would be the age category of those who were first on the ban wagon. But that’s just an idea.
“eight words”? don’t they mean eight ‘letters’?!
and it’s really disappointing that they’re limiting the contest to such a small age group. though we can’t blame them because most Twilighters are in that age category. maybe they didn’t want to be overwhelmed by such a large amount of entries. *sigh*
I think it has the age categories b/c MOST (I didn’t say all) of the people buying these books will be teenagers preparing for the SAT and that is the main group they are marketing to.
no, you have to include these words:
Noble
Sauntered
Inconsequential
Omnipresent
Exiled
Detested
Erratic
Permanence
what does it say after “eight”. it cut off on mine.
never mind. I’m glad i am eligeble. I think it has the age categories b/c MOST (I didn’t say all) of the people buying these books will be teenagers preparing for the SAT and that is the main group they are marketing to.
i am sorry for all of you older twilight fans who can’t enter the contest. Maybe eventually we should have a contest of our own that anybody can enter
do you have to live in the states?
I sent an email to the author via the website… and i did get a response!
Hi Christine,
Thanks for your email.
You are right.
There should have been an 18+ category.
That was a mistake.
In the next contest, we will definitely correct that and include the 18+ category.
In the meantime, please enter the cast member autograph and Defining Twilight T-shirt giveaways on Facebook.
