Little Ashes:Not a Critic Favorite

Well whether it’s the New York, LA, or London Times, Little Ashes does not seem to delight critics. They only thing they seemed to delight in regarding the movie were some really snarky one-liners about the merits (or lack thereof) of the film.

Reelz Channel summed up some of the more unique commentary here.

You can’t will them all, at least How To Be (which will be on On Demand in June–ty Jenny)was better received. If you are a How To Be fan you can snag some wallpapers over at Twilight UK.

Comments

  1. How To Be is On Demand now through Comcast.

  2. SQUEE I’ll have to watch it when I get back home Sunday!!! So excited!

  3. heatherh says:

that sucks for rob, but he’s a talented guy and will most definitely bounce back and go on to act in many more awesome films (and i don’t just mean new moon, etc…)

  4. kpaige4 says:

I really like the song that plays in the background.

    • jane volturi says:

omg me too!!! i love it!!! and i think this movie looks pretty good, dispit what the critics say

  5. Hmm I’ll have to check Fios On Demand later on because I really want to see it. Was it any good? I don’t trust critic opinions…most of the time I completely disagree with them lol

I want to see Little Ashes, too…but the theaters nearby aren’t screening it =( I guess I’ll have to wait until someone bootlegs a copy on the internet or it comes on On Demand.

  6. I’m going to go see Little Ashes Saturday morning, and the reviews prior to it coming to the states and from people who saw it were all good. I guess this will be another example of the people over seas having better taste than we do.

  7. @ Melisa… amen :)

i’ve actually read some really good reviews of it. an anyway, critics generally have zero clue what they’re actually talking about.

  8. Jennifer L. says:

well, they say Little Ashes is as interesting as it is frustrating. maybe the story is a little vague, but i think RPatts did well. he looked really scary at the end. O_O

Wow, whoever told you that it’ll be On Demand in June was wrong lol. How To Be has been On Demand since April 29th. I ordered it, I saw it, it was great =] It’s on IFC Festival Direct (which is two dollars more than usual, but I thought it was worth it).

  10. tndpappas says:

Roger Ebert gave it a good review

  11. I normally find what the film critics find fault with or suggest you skip, I end up liking. The ones they like..not so much. I do not care what critics think, everyone’s taste and interests are sooo different. How can anyone be that influenced by someone elses opinion, especially without seeing it for yourself. I prefer to judge things on the merits for myself. I like a good story, if a movie can tell me one then I’m good with that. That was why Twilight became such an obsession to me. Although Little Ashes isn’t playing anywhere near me I hope to see it on dvd when and if it comes out on one. Robert’s very talented, I’m sure he’ll do well in future projects.

Marianne: I could not agree more. A critic is one person with an opinion. We are somehow suppose to believe their position as a critic is evidence they are more learned than the average viewer and therefore their opinion should be weighted more. I eagerly beg to differ.

Most critics I have seen are critics by default. It is hardly a rigorous job. Nor one that requires extensive education. At best a critic’s contribution to anything can certainly be described as extraneous.

Like Marianne, I will decide for myself.

  12. Creamy: You are right. There is something to be said about “thinking for yourself”. I really hate to think that people are so easily influenced by the opinions of someone unknown to them. I know we here on this site are all Twilight fans and are very supportive of the story and cast so we can relate to eachother’s comments and opinions. That’s why there are such vocal responses when cast members are attacked from outside entities. Having said that, I do think giving a person a chance and at least waiting to see and judge new things or change for yourself is a good thing. Not rushing to judgement.

  13. Personally I wouldn’t be surprised if critics are going to be jackasses about the film simply because they’re bitter over Twilight. As far as Twilight was concerned, their opinions couldn’t have mattered in the LEAST and I don’t think they like “loosing power” like that. I’m not saying everyone will enjoy the film, nor am I calling all critics bitter pointless voices of the media…but it’s something to think about before judging the film. I can’t wait to see it and as an art student I think I’ll be able to understand it on a different level than a critic. When it comes down to it, as others have said, a critic is JUST a critic. It should be up to us to decide what we like and what we watch. From what I’ve seen Rob did a great job as did the rest of the cast. I have a feeling I’m going to like it and no faceless voice is going to tell me otherwise just because they get a paycheck for picking films apart.

This happened with Twilight too and I came out of that film rather happy with it compared to the glum reviews. It’s obvious that critics don’t always know or understand the material they review.I’d venture to say that’s a rather common trend actually. How can I take you seriously if you don’t understand what you’re reviewing?

Morning rant over. This is why I should never be given free time in the morning before my classes!

  14. I would like to add that after sniffing around and reading some of the reviews…they pretty much confirm what ALL of us suspect about the critics level of knowledge on the subject and even just the movie in general! It’s pretty deplorable that they can’t even place the time when the movie was made and yet they’re “professionals”. Over half of the review start with a crack about little ashes being Rob’s attempt to keep from being type cast…wait for it…WTH? This film was shot BEFORE Twilight. Way to do your research people. Most of them seemed to be looking for some polished version of a blockbuster in this movie as well. That’s not what you should expect from a small film like this and just the subject matter alone should hint that the story won’t be straightforward and textbook. It really bothers me that people are trying to cookie cutter something so artistic. THIS IS DALI! HELLO?!
Have any of them seen his paintings? Do your research for the love of art! Even a little time on Wiki would have done some good I think.

    Someone take away my computer…

  15. I”m going to see Little Ashes this afernoon. I’ll let you all know what I think of it when I get back.

  16. valerie schrader says:

I tried to watch How to be and it was sooooo boring. I love Rob and think he did a great job of acting, however this movie is a turkey in my opinion.

  17. The Rotten Tomatoes Community (actual people, not critics) have given it an overall rating of 70%.
    Interesting.

  18. Why thank you. I do love to type walls of text in my spare time. I made another huge post before the current one I see in front of me but I have no idea where it went…maybe I just need to give in and make a freaking blog. B)

    • A kindred soul!!!

So much to say and so little room! LOL!!!

And I agree with your sentiments also…

  19. I must say I don’t mind, because from what I’ve seen of it, I don’t like it either.

    :D

Much love to Rob though. It sucks that people haven’t been liking his movies (critics didn’t like Twilight, and now they don’t like Little Ashes). It’s gotta be discouraging.

    I love him, though.

  20. Kathleen17 says:

The mustache is the greatest one i have ever seen in my life. But I still wouldn’t see it. I looks like a bad puny movie.

  21. I saw it over a hour ago, and I still don’t know what to think about it. I was very intrigued by it. It was intense in some parts, but it was funny too. I think if I would give it a 8/10. I liked all of the acting. Rob was really good. He was hilarious. It was nice to see him doing something that wasn’t fantasy. Overall, I think I liked it. :)

  22. AlbertaJenn says:

I see critics’ reviews as more of “suggestions”, rather than an overview. Good reviewers give an idea of the overall film, not just if they love or hate it. Although I find there are few of those…

  23. o_O my other post is back. I think something must have been wrong with my ipod. Anyway, glad to hear it Ally.

  24. Thank you Ally for giving us your review. I heard some critics gave it good reviews.

  25. Rachel says:

The movie wasn’t very good. I’m not going to love a movie just because Rob is in it. The Cake Eaters with Kristen was far better. Rob took this role because other parts just weren’t coming his way. However, now he can actually select what he wants to do and I’m sure we’ll see him in better movies.
