MTV Movie Awards: Twilight Leads The List

Posted by Twilight_News - 04/05/09 at 11:05 am

The finalists for the MTV Movie Awards  were just announced. According to MTV,

“Twilight” took the lead with seven nominations, including nods for Best Movie, Best Female Performance (Kristen Stewart) and Breakthrough Performance Male (Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner). “Slumdog Millionaire” garnered six nominations, including Best Movie, Breakthrough Performance Female (Freida Pinto) and Breakthrough Performance Male (Dev Patel).”

Twilight was originally up for consideration in the following categories:

Best Movie: Twilight
Best Female Performance: Kristen Stewart
Best Male Performance: Robert Pattinson
Breakthrough Female Performance: Kristen Stewart (Dakota Fanning is also nominated for Push)
Breakthrough Male Performance: Both Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are nominated
Best Villain: Cam Gigandent
Best Kiss: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart
Best Fight: Robert Pattinson and Cam Gigandet

The total, final-cut nominations for Twilight in a tough year are:

Twilight: Best Movie
Rob Pattinson: Breakthrough Male Performance
Taylor Lautner: Breakthrough Male Performance
Kristen Stewart: Best Female Performance
Best Kiss: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart
Best Fight: Robert Pattinson and Cam Gigandet
Best Song: Decode by Paramore

Unfortunately Cam Gigandet didn’t make the cut to compete in the Best Villain category. It’s a tough year for that category where Heath Ledger’s Academy Award Winning performance as the Joker is all but a done deal. There’s also the interesting possibility that Rob and Taylor being nominated in the same category may result in a split vote in which case another nominee could glide in.

Go over and get voting on MTV!

i hope they win all but that’s probably a long shot

  • shareen says:

but then again, i guess i can’t underestimate the voting power of gazillion fans of twilight!

  • SophiePattinson says:

I hope twilight wins best kiss, and Rob wins Breakthrough male performance. The key to all twilighters is just to VOTE VOTE VOTE!

  • Shona says:

Oh god, taylor and Rob are up for the same award…. thats going to be awkward!!! If i was an actor (in my dreams, I know…) , I would hate to be put up for the same award as a friend! Kind of hope Taylor gets it though, since Rob always gets so much attention anyway, but it’s likely not going to turn out that way!!

  • tamara says:

Taylor’s breakthrough nomination should have been for next year. His role in Twilight was too small… but New Moon that will be a true breakthrough.

    • natalie says:

i feel the same, taylor shouldn’t be nominated for this cos it’s such a small role not matter how good he is, it definitely would have made more sense after new moon.

    • Twiligher14 says:

thats a really good point i totally agree

    • Nezzi Loves Lautner says:

well, you see the thing is i think a breakthrough performance in taylors (<3 <3 <3!!!) case is BECAUSE he has soo few lines. he did such a good job with those few lines that he was up there. and since there are fans with OTD(Obsessive Taylor Disorder) who will vote 231 times for him every few days(once our fingers heal!) so yea, i totally think taylor should win… the taylor vs. rob thing is weird tho…
May the best man( or one with the biggest fans!) win!

  • Rue says:

I think “Twilight” will win most of the awards, if not all – we were named women of the year after all by MTV themselves, so this should be a piece of cake. ;) However, if Kristen wins for Best Actress or whatever, that’s kind of an insult to Bella, to be honest, because she did a [mostly] terrible job of portraying her. I can’t say this enough. I’m dreading to see how her rigid, emotionless face is going to pull “New Moon” off.

    • Natasha says:

Got to agree with that statement. Not the most compelling portrayal of Bella (haven’t quite made up my mind if it is all down to Kristen or if a combination of poor script adaptation, poor direction and poor acting). But rigid and emotionless should be perfect for the first half of the film.

      • TeamSwitzerland4Ever says:

I agre a bit with creamy, but also with u guys. A thing Melissa missed heavily in the script was Bella’s unselfishness and her being so stubborn, which is one of the most important personality features of Bella’s. I think Kristen did a fairly good job of what she was given, although I can agree that she might seem emotionless and cold for someone who hadn’t read the books yet. When you read the book you see that in many ways she does hide her feelings to spare other’s pain and that she sacrifises so much for the people around her (unselfish in so many ways). Kristen’s interpretation is good I think, I remember her saying in one interview that in many ways, Bella is just bored. And she is. She’s not looking for someone special or anything, but suddenly it’s there. Comment: I was truly amazed by how real Kristen played pain… SERIOUSLY! That was her best part as far as acting. Rob has a hard time portraying vampire-pain but Kristen was great at it (haha, great at acting in pain sounds odd). That’s for sure useful for her in the next movies, she gets hurt all the time:P Back on track: I think your impression is affected mostly by Melissa’s not-so-good-screenplay, but

I’d also like to make a little comment about Edward’s personality in the movie; even though the “I feel very protective of you”-part is in, I think Melissa could’ve done a better job with it. It’s so sad they removed one scene (see deleted scenes) with Edward and Bella where he tells her not to go out in the woods. (Last part with he biting her finger was totally weird but nm). Also, a VERY big mistake of his personality in the script; Edward tells her everything about vampires himself. I understand that it would be hard not to have him do it, but try, at least! Seriously! That’s also a big part of him, he seeks distance but still wishes so much that he doesn’t need to….. Another way-too-long comment from me… :p

  • mel says:

there is no way they can not win best kiss, i watched the clips for the other best kiss noms and they aren’t even in the same league as twilights.

  • creamy says:

I hate that Rob and Taylor are in the same catagory, but I agree Taylor should have been next year. He was perfect in the screen time he was given, but it was just to small of a presence in the movie for him to win over Rob.

I am openly a major Kristen Stewart fan, so I can not let pass such a brutal insult.

You are seriously mistaken that a win for Kristen would be an insult to Bella. Perhaps you skimmed the book a little too quickly and did not pick-up the many references to Bella’s calm nature. Not only is Kristen the perfect embodiment of Bella, she captured the true essence of her personality and character. Bella is a low-key teenager, the opposite of Jessica the motor-mouth. She hid her feelings to spare others. She subjugated her own desires (leaving Phoenix for Forks) to give her mother a happier existence. No way could she be described as emotionless. Bella simply was not demonstrative.

There is no need to dread New Moon. Stay home.

  • Dalli says:

not to be mean or anything but…how exactly did the following 2 things happen there:
    1. Kristen nominated for best female performance…ummm…yeah? (don’t get me wrong, I love her but I don’t think it was so memorable…)
    2. Taylor got a breakthrough performance nomination for all 2 lines he has in Twilight :S I totally agree with a poster above that yeah he should have been nominated for New Moon if anything… (lets see how he acts because the 1 line I saw in the teasers from ET…I am unimpressed…that “tell me something, you like me” line is…rather awkwardly said…

  • Rachel A. says:

The only category Twilight should even be considered in is the best kiss, I still wouldn’t vote for it, but that is the only legitimate nomination. I am a huge fan of the books, but the movie was a poor adaptation filled with below average acting, mediocre casting, lousy “special effects” and an embarressing script. If the movie wins any awards, they will not be deserved.

  • heatherh says:

Out of loyalty to the books I actually can’t vote for the Best Movie category. Catherine Hardwicke and Melissa Rosenberg did a terrible job adapting the book and I don’t want to send any encouragement to the film makers that they were in ANY way on the right track here.

My hope is that Chris Weitz scraps everything that Catherine did and creates a better and more beautiful Twilight world than the abomination that is the Twilight movie we know today.

  • KAREN says:

MAYBE ITS MY COMPUTER, BUT EVERYTHING I GO TO MTV TO VOTE ITS WELL, ITS NOT AS EASY AS CLICKING MOUSE. WILL KEEP TRYING, DID MANAGE TO VOTE A FEW TIMES THO

  • KAREN says:

RACHEL, I AGREE, SCRIPT WAS POORLY WRITTEN, AS A MATTER OF FACT IT SUCKED, I LOVED THE BOOKS, MOVIE WAS DISAPPOINTING. BUT, SAYING THAT, I THOUGHT THE KISS GREAT, THE ACTORS DID GREAT WITH WHAT THEY HAD. I DID THINK THE ACTUAL FILMING WAS BEAUTIFUL. SO I VOTED FOR
OUR MOVIE, FOR ROB, FOR THE FIGHT SCENE, THE KISS, AND OF COURSE PARAMORE- MOVIE MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN THAT GREAT, BUT SOUND TRACK WAS ROCKIN

  • CD says:

My computer keeps freezing up – maybe too much traffic?? I’m with Dalli – Kristen does not deserve to be in the same category as Kate Winslet – that’s a joke. And Taylor had such a small part in Twilight – Rob’s performance was by far MUCH better. Hopefully fans don’t split the vote and give the award away to someone else!!

  • Profit2829 says:

I want their Best Kiss acceptance speech to be like The Notebook acceptance speech!

    Remember this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYWruJl0prg

Probably a longshot but a girl can dream….haha but then again an appearance by the cast would be awesome and of course they if they can bring along a SNEAK PREVIEW of Twilight Saga : NEW MOON would totally top it up very nice indeed!

    • Melisa says:

      (1) Once again, Rachel and Ryan were dating at the time. Kristen and Rob are NOT dating.

(2)Ashley said they were shooting in Italy at the end of May, which means they might not even be there.

  • Marta Hale says:

    GO KRISTEN AND ROBEEERTTT

  • i’d vote best kiss and best male breakthrough performance for rob. sorry taylor fans, but he didn’t really have a “breakthrough” performance. there weren’t even that many lines for him. as far as best movie… ehh. i love the movie because i love the books. but it’s def not the best interpretation of the book. so no best movie vote.

  • Distractions says:

I had to agree that in all fairness, “Best” of most of these categories is something more than a reach. Up against Oscar contenders and some seriously critically-acclaimed performances in every category – and even the die-hards here know neither is true for Twilight. (I’ve still seen it ten times…doesn’t have to be cinematic genius all the time…sometimes you can just like it anyway…Your basic chick flick.)

But then, I saw there were many relative “fluff” nominees…Miley Cyrus, the HSM crowd, Vin Deisel…and realized, hey, this is MTV. This isn’t the Academy voting. No one is pretending to tout nuanced performances and technical marvels. It’s just what people liked — whether it’s “best” based on other standards is the stuff of other awards shows.

So…you never know. Would you pit Kristen against Kate Winslet at the Oscars? Of course not. But stand them both up on stage at MTV and ask the crowd who’s story they liked better this year…

And really, do you think that the guy who’s holding the BP Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire is going to get worked up about Twilight getting the silly Moonman instead of him?

  • CD says:

I don’t think Kristen S. would beat Kate W. in any kind of award show, but we’ll see….I suppose anything is possible with Twilight fans.

  • Krystal says:

I am a huge Twilight fan (books), but I am just not sure if Twilight (movie) can win in some of the categories they have been nominated in. I just don’t see them really winning anything against Dark Knight or even Iron Man.

  • Twifanatic Amanda says:

I could care less if it isn’t the best movie and they arn’t the best actors. These are the only awards that Twilight will ever be nominated for and I’ll be voting for them in ALL the categories!

  • Gaby J says:

I don’t know about ya’ll but I’m having a hard time voting. I go to website and I click on the category and it shows me the videos w/the nominees. But no where do I see a tab to click to vote… or a link to vote to. I don’t know… I feel frustrated. Can anyone help me?

  • yas says:

i think that twilight should win best kiss. the rest have better nominees…

  • Ally says:

i think at the very least they should win best kiss. that was pretty steamy!

  • Jane says:

Taylor did NOT have a breakthrough performance this go ’round. Wait for New Moon. What in blazes are they thinking?

This ’splitting’ of the nom will hurt them both.

  • Melissa says:

I am NOT able to vote. I’ve tried logging in, setting up a new account… it just keeps redirecting me to mtv.com home page over and over. I’d really like to vote! Anyone have any ideas for me???????????????

  • creamy says:

For those who are having trouble voting, the MTV site is very slow to load. I have tried it from three different computers and been able to vote every time. Give it several seconds more than the norm. You have to do this in every catatgory.

  • Melissa says:

No my problem is NOT that it’s having trouble loading… I just went to the “Technical Support” on the bottom of the mtv home page – which takes you to a place where people post their problems and there are a lot of posts just like mine. We can comment in the boards, even look at our profile that has us logged in… but as soon as we want to vote it says we are not logged in. Then when you click on ‘log in’ it takes you to the mtv.com’s home page. You click on log in at the top and it just reloads the home page, over and over. I don’t know what to do… and it looks like a lot of Twilight fans are having this problem! Does anyone know how to get ahold of an actual MTV tech support person instead of just a message board????????????

  • Amanda says:

Why is Twilight a great book?

  • morg says:

HAHA thats hilarious i am soooo waching that! taylor AND edward….mhhhmmmh ya think they did that on purpouse hahaha sooo waching!

  • mel says:

i think everyone might be forgetting that MTV had the fans choose the noms this year and some of the choices are a bit ridiculous if you ask me.

  • Mels says:

Just voted! I could not get myself to vote for Twilight for best movie, Kristen for best female actress, or Twilight for best fight but I did vote Twilight for Best Kiss and Rob for best Breakthrough Male.

  • Lauren says:

Why was Rob snubbed for the best male performance award while Kristen got a nod?

Also, are Kristen and Rob even going to be able to attend the awards when they wrap in Italy on the 29th or 39th? The awards are on the 31st!

    I hope so…

  • No name says:

ok, my bff is obbesed with that jacob dude, and don’t get me wrong, like i <3 his teeth, lol, but he had what? 3 or 4 lines? still i am hoping 4 the movie to be good! Still, i loved the movie and the fighting part was better in the book, probaly because i have seen the movie 12 times now, but, still i loved the fight, it was really good and belivable, and twilight IS the best movie ever, no ? about it! lol. anyway, i read all the books, and twilight is really good, so in my mind, it will always be the best movie! thanks!

  • Amory says:

As much as I loved Twilight, I cannot vote for them in all categories. Especially in Best Movie and Best Fight. That for me, has to be The Dark Knight and the fight between the Joker and Batman. That movie was awsome. Heath Ledger was a brilliant Joker.

I hope Twilight wins Best Kiss! And I also hope Rob Pattinson wins Breakthrough Male Performance. XD

  • Kesha-Leah says:

    SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE FTMFW :D

  • chloe says:

Idk why but I think when Twilight does win, in whatever categories they win in, the acceptances n thank yous will be awkward. I mean sometimes the interviews I watch the actors are shy and modest, can you imagine them up on the stage with everyone watching while they accept an award?

  • Lucy says:

I hope Twilight wins some of those awards. However, I don’t see Kristen Stewart winning Best Female Performance.

    • jenb says:

Me either. I think she’d have a better chance in the breakthrough category not best female performance. (I think Rob should be nominated in best male performance, not breakthrough. He was awesome as Edward.)

  • ciera says:

I’m torn between Slumdog millionaire and Twilight for best kiss. These are the top two for me.

Slumdog Millionaire was so emotional and very sad(I cried). And it reminds me of Sam kissing Emily’s scar then kissing her lips.
And twilight because it was the most passionate kiss of them all.

I could vote for both but that really wouldn’t count because they would cancel each other out so…
I’m just going to have to wait a little while and mull this over.

  • Miriam says:

Let’s hope to god that twilight doesn’t win best movie or that k-stew doesn’t win best female performance. did you see who she is up against? REAL TALENT!
but this is the mtv movies awards we are talking about and it’s all based on popularity

  • czar says:

the kiss is awesome and rob is great. taylor shouldn’t even be nominated for a 5-minute performance.. its an insult to rob who worked harder in the film. he can get his chance in new moon.

kristen is ok but she’s not the best.. she cant even say anyhting coherent.

  • lindarenee says:

omg rob has to win breakthrough performance!!
he’s totally broken through with this movie!!
    and best kiss!!!! absolutely.

  • jenb says:

Rob totally needs to win this. Taylor shouldn’t even be nominated he was barely in Twilight. Rob was awesome as Edward & should be nominated in best male perfomance! (Oh well at least he was nominated in some category.)I’m also sad Cam wasn’t nominated, he was an awesome James. I’m going to go & vote for Twilight in all their categories as many times as I can. I wanna show my love.

  • Lucyyyy says:

I think that robert pattison should totally win this. Taylor didn’t have a big role in twilight. I CANT BELIEVE ROB WAS GOING TO QUIT ACTING BEFORE HE GOT THE ROLE OF EDWARD… though he is a brilliant singer/song writer/composer!

  • safina says:

Twilight should definitely win the best kiss award if nothing else.
