The LA Times the other day paraphrased Stephenie’s statement and reported "…author Stephenie Meyer tells her readers she has decided to discontinue "Midnight Sun…" now granted later on in the article they go on to quote Stephenie several times including her statement, "and so it is on hold indefinitely".
Unfortunately any number of readers and news outlets picked up "decided to discontinue" and didn’t pick up on the fact that Stephenie actually said "hold indefinitely" (in our opinion a slight but important variation in terms). They are now asking for follow up opinions now that people have had time to digest the news.

I don’t like the secondary title of the LA Times follow-up piece (“Twilight Fans Get Emotional”). It gives the impression that everyone who comments has PMS or something.
I agree. I also don’t like that they left out the “hold indefinitely” part. But then it wouldn’t make such a catchy headline. I saw a little blurb about it on Yahoo news yesterday for the first time. It said pretty much the same thing as this article. I freaked thinking it was something new that I had missed but realized that it was the same thing just told in an un-thorough manner.
(
Wow, that article makes every fan seem like a self-absorbed cry baby. Stephenie needs a break and the fans don’t like it, but the woman isn’t a machine.
And another thing; people need to learn to spell.
Everyone,
on “hold indefinitely” means she is never working on it again. Look up the word indefinitely and it means forever! Come on guys, that article is right. She’s not going to publish it.
I’m very disappointed in Stephenie for reacting that way to the leaked Midnight Sun situation. She needs to grow up and push her insecurities to the side and finish Midnight Sun. Or maybe after the disastrous reacting to Breaking Dawn, she lets what people say get to her even more now. Either way, Midnight Sun needs to be completed and published because it’s amazing and definitely redeems the series after reading Breaking Dawn.
I do not like the ‘emotional’ label from the Times. Many of us who are saddened by this are not teenage girls but grown women with an appreciation for what was developing into a first-rate book that would add to a series that has reminded many of us about the importance of love in our lives. Also, I know Stephenie said “indefinitely,” but I am hopeful that she will take some time off and then get back to it. Her wonderful story and characters deserve it even more than her fans.
“Indefinitely” to me is a small shred of hope…small, but still hope. To me the word means that yes, it’s on hold, and for an unspecified length of time, but the possibility is there to come back to it. I believe she will take some VERY much-needed time off, rest, be with her family, and then get back to it in a year or two when she feels better.
She did say in her statement that at first she was just going to decide to drop it forever, but then she changed that. So I think she will get back to it at some point.
Hmmm, according to MSN encarta, “indefinitely” means “an unspecified length of time.” You must read in between the lines… Steph did not state that she would NEVER come back to MS; from what I had heard in interviews, she was planning to have it finished for next year; she never gave a specific time-line for publication (?… don’t quote me on that). So, for her to “not continue” working on it, I think means she won’t finish it in the time frame she had planned.
I have read the copy she posted on her site, and let me tell you, it was awesome!
If she weren’t going to finish it, she would have stated that… “indefinitely” is her time frame for this. You can’t give yourself a time frame to get over a hurt like this. I believe she’ll return to it when all the negativity has passed and when she feels most comfortable writing. I refuse to believe that Steph won’t finish MS… she loves these characters just as much as the fans do, and I just can’t see her leaving Edward’s story untold. So, until she actually says, “I will not finish Midnight Sun,” I will continue to believe that she will.
I agree with most of you that have posted, the article was terrible! it makes us look like babies. I don’t however agree with Rebecca on one thing. SM doesn’t have to redeem anything after Breaking Dawn, please… lets not keep going back to that.
If you are among the people that didn’t like Breaking Dawn, I’m very sorry you didn’t have a good experience. I loved it! But, I know exactly how you feel. I didn’t like New Moon at all, but I would never dream of asking SM to redeem herself, just because I didn’t like New Moon. I think that right there is part of the problem. The huge temper tantrums people are having over Breaking Dawn and then the Betrayal with Midnight Sun being released without her approval, is enough to give any Person a nervous breakdown!!! She’s not a machine, she’s just a woman who after a dream decided to write, remember that. She has feelings just like you and me. She’s probably hurt and maybe even a bit depressed. How would you feel if people were attacking you like that? I would probably want to hide…I’m not sure??? I would just want to get away from it all and never write again for those ungrateful people, maybe. Not sure??? But, I would be hurt.
I think we all need to be adults about this and give her time to get over all the things that have happened to her. I don’t think she can help herself, I think once the pain of the betrayal and the pain of all the attacks is gone, she will have to finish the book. She can’t help it. But, if we keep on attacking her, then she will never want to finish it. We all need to get off our high horses and put ourselves in her shoes. She doesn’t need to redeem herself. She doesn’t owe us anything, we don’t own her. We have been so blessed to be allowed in her Twilight world and then The Host. Let’s not ruin that by killing her Spirit with constantly attacking her. I think the article is just another way of the media hurting SM, they just need to leave her and us alone!
Anyone else wondering if the leak was intentional due to poor reviews on Breaking Dawn? Also, what better advertising ploy than to “threaten” readers with the postponment of her next work. You have to admit- it’s got fans buzzing!
*SIGH* This is getting sooo old. I love the Twilight Saga, but everybody needs to get something else to read….really, even Stephenie reads other books!
I totaly agree with Isabel, I don’t think I would like to write MS either anymore if I constantly get attact by her Fans and by the Media. SM has a Family and she needs a break!! I can see that. Two Books in a year, the Movie,Comic Com,and and and.Now I have read she is doing something with a Video???? Give the Women a break. I am hoping that after SM had a break and is refreshed again in her mind She will decide to finish MS and it will be the best Book ever.
Just my Opinion
Isabel, I totaly agree with you. All Stephenie needs right now is our love.
I feel like since the release of BD there has been so much negative press surrounding Stephenie and her books. With people being so disappointed with Breaking Dawn (for the record, I am one of the people who really liked it but I am not here to debate that) and now the whole Midnight Sun ordeal. I am with all of you who still have a hope that Stephenie will return to Midnight Sun after a break. If I were her, I would NEED a break from all this so I wouldn’t blame her. “Indefinitely” definitely doesn’t mean never. I just hope that the negativity isn’t getting to her – there really has been too much of it.
Ugh. That article makes me sick. It seems like they chose the whiniest, most annoying comments they could find making Twilight readers sound like little brats. I mean, yeah, I want MS to be written. I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t, but I’m not threatening SM or anything. The person who leaked it hurt her and people have to understand that. I mean, if you had spent months writing a book, gave someone a rough copy of part of it (for whatever reason) and they posted it online, don’t tell me you’d just be like “Oh, whatever”. You’d get mad. It’s like imagine what Steph is going through. Those whiny comments in that article aren’t supportive. Honestly, if we want Stephenie to get back to writing, we have to show support and instead of saying things like
“what a big baby! she should grow up and do her job as a writer and write”
we should say that we understand that it’s a hard time for her, and support her no matter what. You know?
And for the record, according to dictionary.com ‘indefinitely’ means “not definite; without fixed or specified limit; unlimited”
It does NOT mean ‘forever’. Steph is saying that she’s taking a break from MS and when she’ll (or if she’ll) get back to it isn’t set. I think if we want her to get back to it sooner, we need to show support and be positive. Articles like that only hurt her self esteem.
Rebecca you and others like you is the reason Stephenie deserves a break, she isn’t your employee nor your slave, nor she has to redeem herself, this is her story, and she has the right to end how she sees fit.
Did anyone else notice what she posted under the Midnight Sun playlist?
“Since I’m not sure when/if I’ll get back to Midnight Sun…”
That was posted after her inital August 28th posting.
I don’t think the terminology LA Time used is something to get upset about. The best way to clear this up: get Stephanie to clarify her statement.
I loved reading the draft of Midnight Sun. I know some people think of it as “betraying” Stephenie Meyer to read it, but really? Why would she have put it up, if not for the purpose of reading it? I couldn’t help myself. It was amazing. I’m so glad that Stephenie Meyer has a life beyond these characters, which some fans do not. I think that’s the point of the LA Times article. I am just happy, since Stephenie Meyer doesn’t know when/if she’s coming out with Midnight Sun, that she actually took into consideration that she has fans that would love to hear even a little bit from Edward. Thank you Stephenie Meyer!
one more thought… as of the time being, Stephenie Meyer HAS decided to discontinue. It doesn’t mean that she won’t continue eventually. Phrases can be manipulated to whatever one wants them to mean. But, as of right now, I think the LA Times is right.
Pinky, try reading Ellen Hopkins she writes about the struggles of her daughter who is hooked on drugs. First book is good, second not so good though. I plan to have my kids read it when they are old enough for it. Good lessons in her books. Just don’t quit being a SM fan, OK?
I hope I don’t get in trouble for telling you about another author on this site… is that ok??? if not I’m sorry. I just finished Crank and I tought I share the info with Pinky. Just in case… sorry…
Why is it that the LA Times only foused on fans who were upset with her and forgot to mention that even though many fans are disapointed that they many never read MS they support Stephanie?
L.A Times is right about the “on hold indefinitely” part .. sorry to say. Stephenie wrote on her site, and i quote “..I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.” If you want to see for yourself you can read it on her website.
Midnight Sun is the most amazing thing that Stephenie has written. That said, it is her choice whether she finishes it or not. Right now she just needs to know that her (true) fans will support whatever decision she makes – we will still love her no matter what! She doesn’t “owe” us anything – she already has given us four amazing books in the Twilight series; Midnight Sun would just be the frosting on an already amazing cake!
It is pretty hard to get into other books after the Twilight series. Has anyone else noticed that? Even after your little Twilight withdrawal, other books just aren’t as exciting. Even when I go back to old favorites, they seem a little dull.
I am I the only one who feels this way?
I wrote this in their comments:
Stephenie is a unique author in that she has a very close connection to her audience through internet forums, signings, myspace, twilight proms and so on. Therefore, it was hardly suprising that her statement regarding the Midnight Sun leak was straight forward and honest. Who could blame her for feeling hurt and betrayed? Writing is an intimate act and someone violated her rights by distributing her work before she was ready to share it and without her consent. Though, I personally believe she should not abandon Midnight Sun, I do understand that she wants to put it on hold. The resentment that some “fans” are currently harbouring toward Ms Meyers is highly unfair. I would like to remind them that Stephenie’s writing is her intellectual property, therefore it belongs to her. What she decides to do with it is should centre around her rights as an artist and not the needs or demands of her fans.
I woud just like to point out that you incorrectly reported that Stepehenie Meyers had “decided to discontinue” the novel. In her statement she actually wrote that it was on HOLD indefintely.
Fingers crossed once the maelstrom calms down, she will sit down and give Edward the voice we are all craving to hear.
@ Brendan: No, your not the only one! I feel exactly the same way.
I know exactly how you feel Brenda. I’m embarrassed to tell you guys how many times I’ve read the Twilight Series and The Host. Its very hard to get into other books, although I try very hard. In my case, I have no choice, I have a rare brain malformation and after 5 brain surgeries reading is like working out for my brain. So, I have to keep reading in order to keep my brain in tip, top shape!
I’m always buying new books and reading new stuff, but its never the same. I get new book ideas from my Son’s friends (that’s how I found out about Twilight) The addiction to Twilight is so bad, that during my last brain surgery (last January) I had all the books put in my IPOD and listened to Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse the entire time I was in the hospital. I admitted, I am addicted to Twilight and need help… LOL
Ok, I interpret “on hold indefinately” to mean that she will eventually get back to Midnight Sun. Stephenie is such an amazingly talented author. Hearing how much she cares about her characters makes me think that she won’t be able to rest until she has Edward’s completed side of Twilight. I have to believe that Stephenie will complete it…I read what was posted of Midnight Sun and it made me so intrigued I decided to read all the rest of the books over again (even though I just barely read them all) to satisfy my craving. Obviously Stephenie needs time to heal, but time heals all wounds right?
I was devastated to read the article, because I was so looking forward to reading another treasure, but at the same time, I don’t want an author forcing him/herself to write something he/she is disinclined to, because it is the story and ultimately the fans who suffer.
I respect her decision to put the story on an indefinite hold, I just pray every night that she is hit by a flair of inspiration and motivation, and writes it for us.
I think that if the article would have said indefinatly instead of discontinue those mad fans wouldnt have been so mad. Also I think its kind of rediculous the fans that feel like Stephenie owes them and if she doesnt write a book a year or more then they are mad at her. Like some of you have already said she isnt a machine and she has a life. Personal I’m just grateful for the great stories she has written for us to read and even if she never wrote another one again I would still be grateful for what she has written. I’m just glad she is still planning on writting more stories though cause she is my favorite author.
‘Indefinately’ is such a scary word.
. She definately can take as long as a break that she needs, but I want her to come back and finish the book. It would be a huge disappointment if she decided that suddenly to never come back to MS, when I have been looking forward to it for awhile. Anyways, I hope she knows that she is an amazing writer and that bad press is just bad press, and that the leak was a horrible thing, but its not right to punish all of us for it
.
Right now, I dont think that Stephenie has made up her mind to publish the book or not, but I hope her decision wasn’t inspired by the negative press she’s been getting about Breaking Dawn. I hope she knows that I thought her rough draft for Midnight Sun was amazing, it made me love the series all over again. Edwards version of Twilight was kind of unexpected for me and I loved that
“Indefinitely” is a very flexible and somewhat ambiguous term. people need to stop saying that it means something permanent… it by no means does that. It simply means that the project is on hold FOR THE TIME BEING. It’s all up to Stephenie whether she decides to continue and finish the book or if she leaves it where she has.
I agree we need to just give this some time, I can only hope she calms herself down so she can refocus on MS, I love these charchers and am not ready to leave them, the telling of Edwards side of the story was so satisfing my hope is that if she really did leave the story at Breaking Dawn, she will go back through the entire series and tell the saga through Edwards voice!!!
I think that everyone just needs to calm down and take a breath! It is up to Stephenie whether to finish it or not. Sending her letters, calling, etc. won’t change her mind.
My point of view of this situation is she does have the right to be angry, but I feel like she is punishing us, her fans, for someone elses mistakes. I think that she could have handled the situation with more grace, in a more professional matter. Some of my friends are so upset by her reaction to the leak that they will no longer read anything of hers. I am willing to read more of her stuff, but I am still irritated by the fact that she blamed her fans when she should have legally gone after the person who leaked her manuscript. Fall Out Boy had their whole album leaked onto the internet and they didn’t pull it from store shelves. I just hope that she has a nice time with her family, because I do suspect she does need a break. I also hope that she will finish Midnight Sun, because I do think it is better than any of the other books she has written.
Although Stephenie is and always will be my favourite author, it really upsets me that she would let this get to her. Tons of artists and authors have had the same issue of their things being leaked onto the internet! This isn’t the first time it’s ever happened! I truley think that Stephenie will continue writing Midnight Sun, because more than just being a good author, she seems like a good person. One who is very greatful for her fans and the support that we always show for her. I think she just needs some time for herself, i mean she already has 5 books out in a very little time slot. She just needs some time to relax, take a break, go on vacation, spend time with her family and clear her head (if thats possible
). We just need to support her, and eventually i think that she’ll continue Midnight Sun
HOPEFULLY BECAUSE I THINK I LIKE EDWARDS POV IN TWILIGHT MORE THAN BELLAS
, it gives us a chance to REALLY get to know the vegetarian vampires we all know and love
(L)<3
i really hope that after her heart heals she’ll finish the book for us. otherwise, i feel like it’s not fair and in a way punishing her “true” fans who have been waiting for it.
To Isabel,
….I will never stop being a SM fan! I look forward to reading more of her stories. I think she would like that term! (Stories). I love books and I want to find some other books to read too! I cant just sit around and wait on SM to write books and all of you should do the same. Give the women a break.
Thanks for the info on the books to read
I know its a lot to do, but these books do get you addicted….you have to put them down for awhile, or you will never give them up to read anything else. LOL! I guess you have to treat it like an addiction and “step away from the book!” LOL!
Okay, the people that posted the comments that were used in the Article. Um, hello, most of us aren’t like that, and it made us seem like annoying middle school girls that didn’t get asked out to some dance. Or something along those lines at least. The insensitive people need to realize something: imagine your dog just died. ANd then your best friend came up to you and set, get over it already, we’re going to be late for class. Um, hello. Not quite the comforting shoulder you need.
Now intensify that by about, ten times. How do you think Stephenie Meyer feels? I am totally behind her, she needs to take her time. I think we really should find something to occupy our reading interest during this time. There are a billion delcious books out there that you can gobble up just like Twilight (well no, none quite the same, and to myself, none quite as captivating: its my favorite) some of which might include the Great and Terrible Beauty series by Libba Bray..
Well. I am done this little rant…
I have just recently read the series of books.. And I have read the draft via the website. I am devastated at the possibility of this book not being published!! I am totally obsessed with Edward and was telling my friend just the other day that I thought the only thing that would have made the books better for me is if they would have been through Edwards point of view. Also, the fact that if it were that way then It would ALWAYS be about Edward! Then to find out that it ALMOST happened and some idiot may have ruined it for the rest of us… I could cry!! Please PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FINISH IT….. I would pay a serious amount of money for the final copy!!
Let me just add… I would be happy to wait for her much needed break. I am just praying for the future publication of this book.
has anyone thought that maybe the la times were just trying to get attention best way to do that is wait for internet buzz then go against the majority by insulting most of them then people will just on there site and that what they want lol
I’m not sure if the full meaning of her words has sunk in. Many of us wanted another book and were consoling ourselves with the fact that there would be another, now that there isn’t…well…it’s definitely hard to digest. I hope that someday Stephenie Meyer will safely be able to return to her story!
UPDATED TWILIGHT TEASER TRAILERS
(Date Change, don’t get too excited)

Oh, and I think we need to give Steph some space. Seriously, she’s been through a tough time with the Breaking Dawn Controversy, then THIS. I think she’ll continue Midnight Sun, I just don’t know when. Give her some time, and stop attacking the poor woman, she’s not our slave. I know we all adore these books (well, at least the people here) but she’s already published 4 books in what? 3 years..she needs a rest, I know I would.
Correction: 5 books.
Yeah, burned out.
I read a comment on here and also on the article comments about Fall Out Boy putting their album on the shelves after the whole thing had been leaked. I think that it’s obviously different. It’s not like Stephenie Meyer finished the whole thing and then decided not to publish it. If she was actually finished with the novel, her inspiration wouldn’t have faltered, and she could have published it. I don’t think that’s a fair comparison.
I really don’t care. I have read all 4 books of the series and the first 12 chapters of Midnight Sun on SM’s webpage. I really don’t need the *rest*. The series is done and over. If she wants to continue fine I might look into spin offs or extra chapters but I don’t *have* to.
And even though I find SM’s statement on her webpage a little tiny bit whiny I can understand that she now isn’t in the mood to finish Midnight Sun. If she tries to write it now by force it won’t work.
BTW I find Breaking Dawn quite readable but it was also full of plot holes, which is bad and disappointing but if that’s the ending SM had planned since the almost the beginning so be it. I wouldn’t be surprised if SM’s thunder will slowly fade away now. Newcomers to the series might hear about the bad ending and might not want to give the books a try. Well there are other YA, Romance, Vampire and what have books out there so I’m sure something else will get a similar hype soon.
candini…um yeah it does, because it is the same thing. Someone illegally taking someone elses hard work (finished or not) and illegally posting it on the internet where fans and people alike can listen or read or copy or whatever to said work. It is the same thing.
Monika, you’re not on the same page as Candini. You both are discussing different points. Just pointin’ it out there.
