No War Here

There seem to be media outlets, perhaps because it’s a slow news week and they feel the need to create some type of story, that are harping on a book war and now a character war between The Harry Potter Books and the Twilight Saga. We are not linking to this type of lunacy anymore because all it does is give credence to what we consider to be a non-issue.

Taking a quick look around the fandom, it seems there are several other Twilight sites that are also as mystified as we are. Is there a team Gossip Girls vs. a Team Princess Diaries, vs a Team Traveling Pants? Is there a Team Gandalf vs. Team Aslan?  Is there and Anne of Green Gables vs. Little Women showdown death match? The answer is a pretty resounding "NO"!

As far as we can tell, they are two great book series that have inspired people to read and have racked up some pretty impressive sales numbers particularly in the teen market. After that, they don’t have a lot in common in that they are different genres of loosely Romance/vampire/fantasy vs. Quest/coming of age/fantasy.

Sure there are people who prefer either book who will partake in a nonsensical war as to which is better. However we don’t think they are indicative of the fans of both books as a whole. So here to leading a charge and recycling an old slogan we used back awhile ago:  WHO SAYS YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE!

There are plenty of real issues in the world to get riled up about,  making much ado about nothing and fighting over books is certainly not something this website has ever advocated and frankly we think it’s just plain stupid!

I am now going over to the First Book site where I can actually do something positive and meaningful regarding reading. I’m going to vote again and get some underprivileged kids some books. If you feel the same way. I encourage others to do the same.

What’s the point in comparing them? Some people think Harry Potter is better, some think Twilight. Difference of opinion! I like that. There is no point in comparing completely different things.
    And Vi you forgot shape-shifters!!

  2. Teresa says:

Hear, hear! This is exactly how I feel!

  3. Alunamai says:

I really don’t care. Harry Potter is a childrens book hence why it’s in the childrens section. Where twilight is for an older crown…

And… lets thinkg of it this way… didn’t one of the sexy actors of HP 4 play a sexy vampire named Edward Cullen… hmmm so why the hate?

  4. ibelieveinnargles says:

thank you, thank you, thank you, so much for not encouraging this pathetic rivalry. i love twilight AND harry potter.

alunamai: harry potter is not a children’s book. It has plenty of adult fans.

  5. Fynn says:

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH! :]
    I totally agree.

  6. Leigh says:

I will never choose!!!!!!!!!! I love them both!!!!!!!

  7. Adriana says:

Thank you! for sane heads! people the media has become a joke, there are more serious stuff going around and they act like idiots, trying to create trouble between the two fandoms, are you going to give them that satisfication? or we going to unite? hit em where it hurts.

I love both series, thanks to these wonderful books, kids are reading again.

Alunamai I’m 34 years old and I love Harry Potter, so think before you stick your foot in your mouth.

  8. Danny Chipman says:

The only comparison for me between Twilight and Harry Potter is that I enjoyed Twilight far more. Harry Potter just never gripped me the way it did many of its fans, but I still think it’s a great book series and did a lot of good in the world, getting children interested in reading. So kudos ’round the board. Everyone’s a winner.

  9. JulesCullen says:

THANK YOU PEL!!!!! This is the kind of support that fandom EVERYWHERE needs. I wrote to The Leaky Cauldron yesterday to try and tell them how to handle it, since there was a lot of negativity towards Twilight and Twilighters, and this just proves how awesome our moderators are. I’ve been a Harry Potter fan for longer, but I’m just as much a Twilight fan now as I am a Harry Potter fan. PEACE FOR ALL FANDOMS!

  10. InSiriusDenial says:

No one HAS to choose. Some people choose, like me, because they do perfer one series over another. No one is saing anything like you must choose a side or something. Some people are Team Potter ( like me) others are Team Twilight, and it seems like most people on here are Switzerland. But you don’t have to choose, some people just choose maybe because they like one series over another or maybe even a different reason.

  11. tw07 says:

You know what I think? I think that all of this debate is sparked by two things: They both are written by brand new, female authors. And their movies both share a common actor. It has nothing to do with the story. If some random comedy had decided to push its release date to next summer, and Twilight took it’s spot, no one would have cared. So I think that everyone needs to chill out and just be grateful that we have two awesome series to read.

  12. dsolo says:

Totally agree Pel. I am also a fan of both series. I’m also a fan of Darkover, Pern, A Song of Ice and Fire and Wheel of Time. Readers like to read lots of different books. Most authors (including JKR and SM) are fans of other authors/books. Readers like to read, and authors can’t crank out books fast enough for us to limit ourselves to one series. Instead of bashing each other, they should be exploring other books. I also blame the media for constantly comparing the two. They seem to be trying to whip up a rivalry.

  13. Mary says:

Thanks, Pel. I disagree on a lot of things about Twilight, but when people even try to start these comparisons between it and Harry Potter….

It’s absolutely absurd. They don’t even fall into the same category… not even the same planet! They’re barely the same genre.

    Absurd.

    Thanks!

  14. I don’t think you have to chose. Both are great in their own way! I have always been a big Harry Potter fan and now I am a big fan of Twilight. I love both!

  15. Karen says:

the only comparison that i see is that one) they are hugely popular and two) they have sell millions of books. for me that’s it the rest is kinda retarted (excuse my language).

  16. Ida says:

I think we should set an example. I think we should show the world how mature we all are and how we are not going to allow the media to control us by creating and fueling this “Book War”.

My kids and I were talking last night and we were saying how cool it would be to have shirts made to support HP and Twilight, something that said for example: “I’m a Twilight fan and a HP fan” or something silly like that or I support HP and Twilight. Of course a lot cuter and wittier… And of course wear your shirt to both movie release, have all of us wear our support shirts and see what that one media place has to say about our mutual support. I don’t know we were just throwing some silly ideas around… Can you picture how could it would be? It would be very nice to give them something good to say about us for a change.

  17. Melissa / MLWL says:

Bravissimi, ladies! No kidding on the dueling fandom thing – a couple of my friends and I were interviewed by MTV when we were in Chicago for the Meyer event AND a HP conference, and we walked away with the distinct feeling that they were going to “heavily edit” our points… They asked us how the fandoms stacked up, and we said that they were similar in that they are both about books and the fans want the movies to be right, but definitely had their own strengths and weaknesses, both of which we discussed. I’m pretty sure that they’ll only use our hand motions in a way that implies Twilight is somehow a worse fandom or something. *grumble*

  18. Chela85 says:

Nice post Pel. Lets stop the fighting one site at a time. So many people have been saying that it’s pretty pointless. You can like whichever book you want and, like many people, you can like both. So we can put all this silly fighting behind us and come back together again as passionate devoted readers. <3

  19. urcoolcarrie says:

THANK YOU for posting this. This solves everying.

  20. SiriusIsSerious says:

Indeed, the whole so-called “battle” between HP/Twilight fans is ridiculous. I’m a happy fan of both with just a LITTLE more love for Harry, but that’s okay. My thing is, when I want a fix of good romance, I read Twilight. It’s perfect for my romance thrist. And when I want something more centered around friendship and battles and growing up, I read Harry Potter. Both suit the seperate cravings I have for literature, so why should I choose one or the toher? :S

  21. Katherine-The-Crowned says:

You guys rock! The whole “which is better” thing is very unnecessary. Pel, I love what you’ve written.

  22. Jillian Mary says:

    kudos,
    major major kudos!
no one should have to chose
    or fight over it.
can’t we all just get along.
humans, muggles, wizards, werewolves, and vampires.
    : DDD

  23. Leah says:

Thank you for posting this, I totally agree. All the media coverage comparing the two is getting kind of old. I mean it’s understandable, especially since the movie release date changes, but there’s no need for a “war”. Like what you like, and don’t waste your time and energy on something that you don’t.

  24. Sare says:

Probably my fave update. And also (this is to TheAbbyNormal) did you get your name from Christopher Moore’s book?

  25. Liv-wa says:

    THANK YOU PEL!

This war is extremely irritating to a die-hard fan of both books. As an active member in forums relating to both books I hate the feeling of having to choose. I really just wish people could get past their stubborn ways and enjoy each series as they are. Harry Potter made me want to read more, and that was how I came across Twilight.

Is it really that hard to love both equally?

  26. Beth says:

Thankkkk you lexicon for addressing the so-called “war” sensibly. It’s gotten to the point where I refuse to read most online forums. Really, it’s gotten out of hand. Lots of sites are biased and then there’s all the bashing. Ugh. How tempting it is to just defend Twilight when I go on mugglenet. This really can’t be good for my stress levels.

So, team Switzerland approach it is :D

  27. Katia says:

    RAVENCLAW!!!! WOOOHOOOO!

  28. Katia says:

I am a ravenclaw too! What a coincidink! hahahahaha!
    But I’m team edward…hahaha.
I totally agree though. People need to stop making up arguments to try to distract people from the real problems.

  29. kessie1122 says:

    I’m not a Ravenclaw. I’m a Slytherin. XD

I love Harry Potter and Twilight both. Each is great and amazing in their own way. I want a Harry Potter watch! lol. I could wear it with my Twilight shirt.

  30. Alex says:

WOW. Thank you so much for saying this! I totally agree! (I’ve actually made several videos on the issue.)

  31. Really, this is getting ridiculous. Now, the new James Bond movie moved back a week, from Nov. 7th to Nov. 14th, Now no ones fighting about that. Right? So we should all go bake cakes for one another.

  32. cullen#8 says:

YES!!! thank you! i was a Potter fan first, but i really love Twilight and i was so scared that a fight was going to start between the two. i’d never be able to choose a side! they’re both great! why does everyone have to compare them?!

  33. icky vicky says:

Hey anonymous, way up there at number 26, if you don’t have anything with a point to comment about, just don’t comment, please.

  34. Keira Pakusu says:

Hear hear! There is no war between Twilight and Harry Potter. Both are fantastic series that should be enjoyed by everyone. We shouldn’t have to chose! I myself refuse to be apart of this imaginary war stirred up by the media.

  35. pinky says:

Are’nt we lucky enough that we have some GREAT books to read! Be happy people! Without some great Authors we would be a very boring bunch!!! :)

  36. ILRTS says:

OH! You have no IDEA how happy I am to be sucked into such awesome books. Really, I can’t wait for midnight sun to come out, though, I will miss the two other sagas. The potter books are amazing! As are the Twilight books and I am really sad to see the saga has drawn to a close. I will read more books if there are any more on Jacob, Bella, Edward or really, basicly, any charictar from any of the books that have passed.

Pinky, we ARE lucky to have these great- no -AWESOME books to read!

    ~ILRTS

  37. kessie1122 says:

I was actually a Harry Potter fan after Twilight. But I love both.

  38. Blair says:

thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! can i say thank you again? well i will. THANK YOU for posting this!!! i was really getting annoyed of the whole “Twilight vs. HP war”. IT seemed like it was impossible to like both. but its not.. HP was the book that really got me hooked on reading and Twilight made me like reading even more. if not for Harry Potter, I wouldn’t have read Twilight. the only reason i bought TWilight was becasue i had nothing to read after i finished Deathly Hallows ( i didnt know at the time that it was so awesome!).
But, what i dont get is why people think you cant be a fan of both books… Becasue i know a ton of people (myself included) who like both series. Muggles, vampires, wizards, and werewolfs are all equally aweome to me!!
Once again, THANK YOU for posting this!!
… oh, and thanks for mentioning Gossip Girl, Princess Diaries, And The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants. Im a fan of all of them!!

  39. madeleine says:

Thank you for posting this. I totally agree. I love both twilight and harry potter and my best friend who loves twilight more always makes me chose and drives me crazy. I always tell her there is no war but does she listen? No
