No War Here

Posted by Twilight_News - 20/08/08 at 05:08 pm

There seem to be media outlets, perhaps because it’s a slow news week and they feel the need to create some type of story, that are harping on a book war and now a character war between The Harry Potter Books and the Twilight Saga. We are not linking to this type of lunacy anymore because all it does is give credence to what we consider to be a non-issue.

Taking a quick look around the fandom, it seems there are several other Twilight sites that are also as mystified as we are. Is there a team Gossip Girls vs. a Team Princess Diaries, vs a Team Traveling Pants? Is there a Team Gandalf vs. Team Aslan?  Is there and Anne of Green Gables vs. Little Women showdown death match? The answer is a pretty resounding "NO"!

As far as we can tell, they are two great book series that have inspired people to read and have racked up some pretty impressive sales numbers particularly in the teen market. After that, they don’t have a lot in common in that they are different genres of loosely Romance/vampire/fantasy vs. Quest/coming of age/fantasy.

Sure there are people who prefer either book who will partake in a nonsensical war as to which is better. However we don’t think they are indicative of the fans of both books as a whole. So here to leading a charge and recycling an old slogan we used back awhile ago:  WHO SAYS YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE!

There are plenty of real issues in the world to get riled up about,  making much ado about nothing and fighting over books is certainly not something this website has ever advocated and frankly we think it’s just plain stupid!

I am now going over to the First Book site where I can actually do something positive and meaningful regarding reading. I’m going to vote again and get some underprivileged kids some books. If you feel the same way. I encourage others to do the same.

    Yeah I agree!
I love both Twilight & Harry Potter! <33
Both are awesome books..and movies! =)

  • Alanna says:

THANK GOD!!!!! They r just 2 very popular books! I like them both! I grew up with HP but I LOVE Twilight! I’m def. not choosing on Facebook there r discussions Harry Potter or Twilight, Who would win a fight Harry or Edward? I never finished Harry Potter I stopped at 4 cause my book was breaking so I just saw the movie which is my favorite but I WILL finish them when I have time. But it has been bugging me cause I love them both! JK Rowling and Stephenie Meyer r AH-MAZING authors! I like them both so why would u choose??

  • jona says:

would it be bad to wear this to the harry potter movie?

    http://www.twilightshirts.com/shirt/mrscullen

  • ally says:

    i totaly agree.
HP got me to love to read and changed my lfe forever. Twilight made me feel things for books i have never felt before.
but if i had to chose Harry or Edward, it’d be Edward.

  • Bananaa says:

A-MEN to that! I’m getting VERY tired of this nonsense.

  • Rachel says:

I love them both, and I really hate it when the media say things that are like pouring oil on a flame. Two other things:
    Go Remus.
    Go Jasper.
    ‘Nuff said.

  • Ashley says:

Yes! Exactly! Who says I have to choose?! I have a bag that says that and it is just full of truth and awesome. In fact, on my book shelf, the Twilight books and the Harry Potter books are right next to each other, living in peace and harmony with I think my Princess Diaries books behind them. Hurray for no wars!

  • LeeO says:

The argument posed by the article is divisive to the extreme. Why should there be any side? We are all Switzerland on this issue and should remind anyone who wants to instigate an issue between anyone on what appears from a fan of both series a specious argument is just bad, bad, bad.

  • Unaiza says:

I agree 100%. All these people want to do is make stuff out of nothing. for the record, hard core HP fans are more likely to be haters than twilight fans. i’m just going by what i’ve seen on mugglenet and other HP fan sites. I grew up with the harry potter franchise and am finding myself mature with the Twilight saga. Undoubtedly, die-hard fans are pretty close to both. But all this hatred NEEDS TO STOP!

  • Isabel says:

I believe its extremely immature to say one book is better than the other. I was a HP first, when I finished Deathly Hallows I was lucky enough to find Twilight and I loved it. The books are so different, how can you compare them??? JK Rowling is NOT better writer than SM, she does have a different style, she is very good, she has an amazing imagination and I LOVE HER BOOKS. But, please people stop the HP is better or Twilight is better! Both are great!!!
I was told by a HP fan that they hate Twilight because it knocked off one of the HP books of the top ten book list or something??? that’s so dumb!!! so if Nicholas Sparks (I Love his books too!) new book (coming out soon) sells more books than JK Rowling’s next book (I know it’ll never happen) are you going to hate him too? Do you see how silly it is????? There books! and movies! Its all so silly…
I think its time for HP fans and Twilight fans to show the world that the media can’t control us. They want us to fight, that’s why they are doing these stories. So, please lets be adults about it and show the people writing these BOOK WAR stories that we are smarter than they are.

  • Charlie says:

No one says you can’t be Switzerland about more than one thing. :D

  • sarah_cullen says:

    hahah good allusion charlie!!

  • Maggie says:

I agree! I truly am an avid fan of BOTH series, and as Bella would say, “I’m Switzerland”….much love to Stephenie Meyer and JK Rowling thank you BOTH for sharing such amazing stories with the world:) (the Twilight series is my favorite of the two :) :) Gotta love Edward and Spunk Ransom!

  • sarah_cullen says:

haha good allusion charlie… and cara’s : “peace” said aro hahah

  • sarah_cullen says:

oops i wrote that twice haha

  • Ness says:

Yeah, it’s really dumb to try to pit the two series against each other. I love them both, for different reasons. If RPattz can bridge the two, so can I! :)

  • ForeverDazzled says:

    Thank you!

It’s awful how the two are always being
    compared.
I am a Harry Potter fan AND a Twilight fan.

The two series are just so different,
they create different worlds, different journeys…
I first read Harry Potter when
I was eight, and I’ve grown up with it, therefore
it’s just become a part of me.

On the other hand, I began reading Twilight
in May of this year, but it has had as great of
    an impact.
Both series are extremely enjoyable and
addicting… there’s NO NEED to choose.
People are entitled to their opinions, but for me, Mugglenet AND TwilightLexicon are two of the
first sites I visit when I go online.

    YAY for Wizards!
    YAY for Vampires!

    [and werevolves/
    shapeshifters
    too..which are in BOTH
    novels. =]]

  • jackie says:

Here, here. I am an avid Harry Potter Fan, The Twin – Fred and George – are my favorites. I love Harry Potter and because of it it got me into “Twilight”. Like you guys said…it’s two great books that got people into reading and isn’t that all that matters? Long Live Harry Potter and Long Live Twilight!!! It’s ridiculous to put two really great books against each other. And as for the movies…I’m happy but sad because I’ve been waiting so long to see the latest Harry Potter movie and now I have to wait until next summer – it sucks; however I am VERY EXCITED that Twilight will be released earlier. It’s a tough decision to make between two very good books so like the editors said “Why choose?” Who says you can’t love two books that are different?

  • TwilightNorthwest says:

Totally agree with you – In what universe should we have to choose?

  • alize says:

soooo agree people just have problems if they try to compare to completely different series!!!

  • A. Lincoln says:

I never really thought about the two being similar enough to compare, but meh – to each his/her own.

  • I think we should all hold hands, sway around in a circle, and sing religious campfire songs like Kumbaya. Or the campfire song song. I love spongebob. Ahh! Or like in Hey Arnold! The subway song:

    Let’s all hold hands,
    Here on the subway,
    ‘Cause we’ve been stuck here in the dark for way too long;
Oh, it’s hot, and it stinks
    And the train is on the blink;
They lock the doors – We’ve got no choice – Let’s get along!

YEAH! HP and Twilight- Unite! Twarry Potter rocks!

  • Kristine says:

MORE POWER TO YOU TWILIGHT LEXICON! i love that people are trying to end this petty feud. I like being a fan of both and not clashing them together.

  • Twifanatic Amanda says:

Yay go you guys! I just commented like everywhere before I came here telling everyong that it’s the people who write the articles having nothing to write about and wanting us to fight! Power to the Lex!

  • Rose says:

Absolutely agreed. I love both books so much they are both a complete and total obsession, and I hate how people want to compete the two. GO TWILIGHT LEXICON!!

  • mangobun says:

I’M TOTALLY AGREEING TO THIS!!! i ABSOLUTELY ADORE harry potter series AND twilight series!! both of the sereis are equally AMAZINGLY AWESOME!!! i honestly can’t see why you would have to choose between these two rgeat series!!! that’s right!!!! u got tell that twilight lexicon!!! HAHAHA….. harry potter and twilight RULESS!! :D

  • cullengirl1 says:

You go girl! I totally agree. I think the interviewers are wearing that out as well. I am sure Rob is tired of being asked to compare HP and Twilight.

  • krissy says:

amen to that. both of the series are awesome, no one should have to choose

  • you know what? There should be a HP ANS TWILIGHT LEXICON-TOGETHER! y not get all information at once? Im pretty sure most people here would like that! Im not saying me or you, but someone should make that

  • Kim says:

Pel – your article is why I LOVE THE LEX!!!!!!!

  • Carly says:

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone vs.
Bella Swan and the Man of Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets vs.
Bella Swan and the Chamber of Mirrors
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban vs. Bella Swan and the Prisoner of Forks
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire vs.
Bella Swan and the Friend of Fire
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix vs. Bella Swan and the Order of the Volturi
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince vs.
Bella Cullen and the Half Blood Princess
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows vs.
Bella Cullen and the Deathly Meadows

  • sissy says:

hellz to the yea!!! i am an old yet forever fan of harry potter. it holds a most special place in my heart. and twilight is right next to it!! no one can replace the magic of JK Rowling, but Stephenie Meyer is awesome enough to get to second place!! i cant think of any two greater series. they are too amazing to fight over!
while waiting for breaking dawn, i reread the twilight series. but i finished early, so i started on the harry potter series! now all my twilight saga books have been lent out, and im reading harry potter. when news is dead in the twilight fandom, i hop over to the harry potter news sites-and vice versa!
    im with ya definately Pel!

    harry potter/twilight fan forevereverevereverever!

  • SarahlJ says:

Carly!!! That list is GREAT!! I stumbled upon Twilight only 2 months ago, and I’m on my 3rd read! I LOVE the books!

I posted on the HP Lex about taking sides… some people are so petty… I said that I whole-heartedly agreed that it was okay to have BOTH! I even have a Flair button on my Facebook that has a pic of E&B and the HP trio that says, “Because it’s okay to like both.” There are certain differences in each series that make them unique- Twilight will never replace HP, and HP will never replace Twilight!

I also agree that people are taking this WAY too seriously… after all, both the books are FICTION!!! It’s ok to voice your opinion, but not to the point of being obnoxious.

  • proud_twihard says:

yeah, I hate it when HP fans talk trash about twilight, or vis versa

  • Linz says:

    Love it Carly!!!!

I would like to add that my absurd love of HP was the very reason that Twilight was even recommended to me! Now I love them both (absurdly)!!!

  • Carla says:

    Carly:

    Best. Comment. Ever.

  • The Singer in White says:

Given that the site has done some things that has made me incredibly angry in the past, I am quite pleased that this has been posted. (I’m actually on here reading up on the Volturi. I have two crossovers circling in my head)

I’m going to throw my personal bias aside, but I will say this: I am part of the Harry Potter generation, and I am pretty proud of it.

I can take it if a Twilight fan prefers Twilight over Harry Potter. It’s their opinion, and they are more than free to express it as such. Therefore, I have every right to express mine.

I don’t talk trash; I criticise. I don’t mind if not everyone agrees with my views. In fact, one of my favorite things to do with others is to get into a good, healthy subjective debate.

But when fans of one fandom taunt fans of another fandom because their movie got moved to an earlier date while the other fandom’s movie got pushed back to a later one, I become furious. Or when I read about individual accounts of one girl spitting on another and keying her truck for disliking a set of books, and another where the girl cusses her friend out for and slaps another multiple times for defending the friend with the opposite opinion as her, I HIT THE ROOF.

Have you guessed that all individual accounts I have described are things that die hard Twilight fans have done to others? I’m not making any of this up. I read the youtube video comment taunt myself when watching the HBP trailer, and I have read about the other two accounts on an anti site, a place where the members are smart, witty, and self-respecting individuals who treat each other with respect.

Now some of you may have gotten certain underlying messages in this post. If you find accounts of HP fans acting just as rabid, I will be more than happy to see them myself.

This post makes me very happy. Please find a way to spread this post. Because there are people out there that really that rabid and insane. Maybe some day they will wake up and realize how stupid they truly are.

  • sou says:

::sigh:: I’ve been really tired of all these lame HP/Twilight comparisons. It’s cool someone finally said something about it.
lol they don’t even make SENSE together. like you said. It’s seriously like Gandalf v.s. Asians. lol

  • Isabel says:

    The Singer In White,
I think, or maybe I should say I hope… the people that are doing these horrible things are doing it because they lack maturity and some day soon will grow up. When we are young we allow our emotions guide us, sometimes we don’t think before we do things. Although, I have to admit I have met very mature HP and Twilight teens, but this weekend I have read very rude and nasty comments from both groups.

But again, it all has to do with maturity and how well people can control their emotions. People get very heated about these books and it makes me very angry that certain media places are using the HP and Twilight fans this way. They know very well that all they have to do is add a little fuel to the fire and BOOM! they will have thousands of hits on their site… It doesn’t feel good to know we’re being used!
Anyways, I hope that with time these rude fans from both sides will realize how stupid all this is and how much they are hurting both communities. I do get very embarrassed when I read about the bad things both sides have done and trust me I got a lot of abuse over at The Leaky Cauldron and Mugglenet this weekend trying to peace make. But, I understand that its a very emotional thing and that it will take a long time for tempers to calm down. I’m sure HP fans got abuse at the hands of some Twilight people.(I’m not blaming just HP fans) I just hope that all of us can come together and not allow other sites to use us… HP and Twilight fans all over the world don’t have to love each other, lets just get along and work together so we never get used by the media this way again.

  • beccaboo says:

    good
    i agree
    no need to fight
    both are good books
    so yay!

  • Courtney says:

    Oh.My.God
    Seriously.
There are more important things going on in the world!
It’s like these people have nothing better to do!
I’ve never read Harry Potter, but I’m not going to bash it just because someone thinks its better than Twilight! Some people need to seriously grow UP.
I admire all of those who are mature enough not to fuss around about two completely different books!
If I hear anymore HP/TW fuss, I think I’ll throw up.

  • dazzledbyEdward says:

FINALLY!! Something that’s rational between Twilight and HP!!! No competition…lets be friends people okay?…

  • Sarah says:

    Here here!
Fighting over books is just pointless, it wont get you anywhere because once some one has chosen their favorite book, they won’t just switch it because you yell at them to do so…
    Pointless… Completely pointless and stupid.
You’re right, WAY too much in the world to worry about…

  • Sara( Yeah theres many of us) says:

    Amen!

  • Shelley b. says:

I completely agree. The Harry Potter vs. Twilight Saga ordeal is getting old.

  • Twilighter Fanpire says:

I agree with most of the people on here. Twilight is not better then Harry Potter and Harry Potter is not better then Twilight. They’re both truly awesome book series that have changed thousands of people and will continue to do so. People need to grow up and stop being influenced by the stupid media who are always looking for something steamy to report.
MAKE PEACE, NOT WAR and for the love of Twilight and HP,
    Why can’t we be friends?
    Why can’t we be friends?
    Why can’t we be friends?
    Why can’t we be friends?
    HP brought Hogwarts and wizards
Twilight gave me vampires and shapshifters

haha sorry just had to say that ;D it doesn’t even rhyme..
Oh yeah I have a question, is the official guide thing still coming out in Dec. 12?

  • Kate says:

I love you guys! Thank you so much for doing this!

  • babysis says:

Huzzah for you, Pel! I’m so glad that the Lex isn’t participating in any of the “us vs. them” junk. I have been excited about both series, and, as a teacher, will advocate just about ANYTHING that will get teens to read. I have, and will, recommend both HP and Twilight to kids. Keep reading!

  • Vi says:

    I SO AGREE!
    GO PEL!
And Ms. Rowling and Ms. Meyer!
Go Vampires, werewolves, humans, wizards, witches, muggles, and all the other magical mystical creatures in the world!
