In the Press

Kim of Cinematical asks the question, "Is Twilight Anti-Feminist?" and looks at several sides of an interesting and often posed issue.

The Sydney Australia based Sunday Morning Herald has a mixed review of Breaking Dawn. They also feature a different cover shot. Any Aussie fans out there that can tell us if that graphic appears on your books? It’s the first we have seen of it.

  1. jaimee says:

nope not the cover we got in melbourne….maybe it’s just in sydney, doubt it thought.

  2. Samantha says:

Man, I’m not one to shoot down a sort of negative review of BD (and she did make a good point about the change in Edward and Bella’s relationship)

BUT if she can’t even find the right cover, jeez.. why should anybody take that seriously at all? It’s a fanmade cover so if she actually read the book she would have had to have seen the real cover, but she still put a fan one up?

  3. Kole says:

Im from Oz and that Is a fan made Cover. All you had to do was search Google before the real cover was realesed and it was there with the title ‘Fan made Cover’ ^^

  4. Sarah says:

Our BD cover is the same as the UKs but with out the funky red writing…. its a paper back with a small image of the chess pieces.

Check out our cover here :P http://www.twilightaustralia.net/gallery/displayimage.php?album=24&pos=6

  5. Hannah says:

    never seen that one before.
the australian version, as far as i’m concerned, is the same as the uUS

  6. Sarah says:

Nah, the cover we got in Australia was the same one you guys all got everywhere else. The journalist mustn’t have done a thorough enough search for the cover, because this one is fan-made. I saw it months before the real one came out.

  7. Olivia says:

the australian version is exactly the same as the US and the rest of the world.
that cover is fanmade, ive seen it on the internet before, the writer of the article obviously didnt do their research very thouroughly.

  8. Lisa says:

It’s not the same as my covers. And i got three copies. so….

  9. Georgia says:

that’s not the cover i have, nor have i seen it. i work in a bookstore and we saw nothing of that, not even in promotional material.
(just fyi, i’m in western australia.)

sydney morning herald isn’t exactly our classiest newspaper though. :P probably why it’s not an accurate cover.

decent review though, which is saying alot for the SMH. very true about edward’s diminishing role, so sad. i too was left feeling a little empty in regards to edward. too much renesmee, not enough edward. was glad of the focus on the werewolves though, after being so minor in the other books, they deserved it. renesmee didn’t earn it like they did. :P

we got paperbacks straight up though, which is weird, normally hardbacks are the release covers – but according to my boss, american paperbacks are poor quality and thus that’s probably why you got hardbacks. still… we got hardback harry potters.

  10. TopazTearz says:

I live in A.C.T (Canberra) and I got the U.S cover as well…I got the book on the first day it came here…and I have been giving it to all my friends to read since I finished. God I remember hyperventilating standing behind the lady who was buying her order…I was thinking PLEASE HURRY UP!! And the person next to me was also looking at the book and we were both like WE WANT BREAKING DAWN!! *Hyperventilate*. And we got a free book and bookmark!! WOOT WOOT!!!

  11. Jade says:

Bahahaha. That cover is full of crap.

Us Sydney siders have the chess board cover.

  12. Jade says:

I was one of those school girls at Kinokinuya. :)

    YAY.

  13. J says:

That cover’s definitely fanmade – it’s been around for a few months. Ours is the same as everyone else’s. And we didn’t have to wait ’til noon! We were there when stores opened, and had the book shortly before 10am.

The review…well, as someone said, the Herald isn’t our classiest paper ;D The reviewer has some good points…when she’s talking about what’s good. The idea that Edward is sidelined in BD is absurd, though. Even in Jacob’s pov, Edward glows from the pages. The power of his agony in chapter 9 is breathtaking. Then when we get back to Bella’s pov, the strength of their love, his perfect trust in her, the way he can’t bear a moment away from her…then in the battle, and those last few pages…I am massively, intensely devoted to Edward as a character, and I didn’t find him missing at all. The Herald reviewer really is responding like a child.

Jacob’s story is not ‘inconsequential’, the gathering of vampires is brilliant, and Edward is breathing in every page just the same as he always has. And the love between Edward and Bella will never, ever be “background muzak”.

Australian media has had plenty of positive reviews of BD – let’s hope this one is just a bad moment of weakness.

  14. kayla says:

hey guys!!! I loved BD with all of my heart it was wonderful, and for all of the people who say that edward was side lined i kinda disagree because imagine how much he had on his mind with renesmee, and bell and the sake of his family’s life i mean i cant speak for anyone but i think that is why towards the end he was always so focused. and it was all to keep his family safe.

    I <3 twilight!!! kayla

  15. kayla says:

hey guys its me again i just wanted to say thank you sooooooooooooooooo much to Stephanie Myer i mean she has truly inspired me and i will always look up to her!!!

    ~ Thank you,
    Kayla <3

  16. Phoebe says:

I have the Austrailian version and its the same cover as the US just paperback.
Did anyone else dislike BD or was it just me?

  17. lil says:

ours is exactly the same, even tho like 100000000 people have already told you that, o well. i’m just excited cos i just finished the 40 hour famine and i can EAT again!!!! SMH is just wierd.

  18. Rhiannon says:

i have never seen that book cover, and in my opinion it looks like crap and ruins the whole theme of all four of the books. the chess pieces are much better!

  19. Danica says:

I felt the same. It wasn’t the same with Edward… I don’t know it’s just like he wasn’t there as much. I mean I still loved the book, how could I not? But it was the least favorite of the series for me. It seemed almost a little rushed in a wierd way. But I loved it. It’s just the few things that got me sad.

  20. Krystle says:

hmmm, i must say, i half agree with that article. towards the end of the book, Edward did seem to fade just SLIGHTLY once the focus was more on Nessie. and part of me longed, and still longs to see more interaction between bella and Edward (now that shes a vampire and everything) but im happy with Breaking Dawn. and unlike alot of people here, it isnt my least favourite of the series. Eclipse would take that role for me.

yes, we all wanted to see more Edward and bella, because that’s what got everyone hooked in twilight. But BD did have tons of that too. but of COURSE we wanted to see more xD who can get enough of edward! not me, thats for sure. But if you think about it, The end of breaking dawn left alot of openings for not exactly a 5th book, but a chance to branch off and write about other characters. most likely Jacob and nessie.

im rambling now…anyways. i loved Breaking dawn, it did seem a little rushed, i would have liked to see more edward and bella at the end, but im fine with how it is. :D

  21. The Twins- Rhiannon & Bailey says:

    Well,…..what an…….interesting cover for BD.

(Will spoil if you haven’t read yet!!!)
Um, anyways, we LOVED LOVED LOVED!!! BD.

Sure, we were a little worried when Bella was sick
    from pregnancy, but wasn’t everybody?!
And *feeling a little ashamed* we were a little mad at Nessie.
That is until we actually got to know her, and know that she really loved Bella and didn’t want to hurt her in any way.

We were also REALLY glad that Jacob found is soul mate!!!
We were a little surprised that it was Nessie. (Especially since she’s half vamp. and everything)

But (An interesting thought) what kind of child would Jacob and Nessie conceive if she ever got pregnant?
Now THAT would be something that would be fun to read about!

Okay, well, we hope that everybody else has enjoyed (and will enjoy) the book as much as we did!

  22. callie says:

ok, i’m really disappointed in some of the fans of the twilight series,
stephenie did very well on bd, its kind of annoying to read that some of the fans wanted more “dazzling moments” or whatever if you kids read right you would have noticed when edward smiled his crooked smile at her she said something like if she still had a beating heart it would have stopped.
i think thats some dazzlement from edward people, and yes edward is one of the main reasons i love the book. but i was looking forward to reading more about bella then edward. cause she would explain all the changes with her. and when bella got pregnant i did expect that. and i was really excited cause that changed the book totally. and i agree with the others fans that said the relationship changed in a good way between bella and edward they became more like a family. cause they had renesmee. and you other fans who didn’t like that you need to remember its not you who was the one that had those dreams and wrote the wonderful series that all had us mesmerized by edward or jacob. it was stephenie and she did well.
but you can all imagine the book ending different for your enjoyment..
and i was glad to read more about jacob he is so hilarious in the book.
and last stephenie did say an interview once she would get back to the cullens somehow, so i have a feeling we’ll all read about them in a couple years.
    (:

  23. Rachel says:

I saw that cover way before BD came out, I’m pretty sure it’s a fan art.

  24. Maria says:

Ive never seen this cover before
mind you it looks knid of gay
what was the sydney morning herald thinking?

  25. Bex says:

i have to say some of the feminist comments made me laugh (i commented back and said that to them). i loved BD but i can see where everyone is comming from. i would have loved to see bonding between edward and renesme.

one thing i have to say though is: i love Garrett!!

  26. Blood Fae says:

Hey I’m an Aussie and I absolutely loved BD 100 percent! It was obvious she’d been building to it for the entire series. As for the cover, I don’t know if we have that one, we got a different one for Twilight but I prefer the orginals, the Breaking Dawn cover was a really cool metaphor. I haven’t seen that cover in any book shops though.

  27. R says:

I disliked the article on Twilight and feminism. Seriously it was kind of lame. Is that a real journalist that wrote that thing? Come on. 2)The Edward-Bella relation is not abusive and controlling because… she think she’s going to handle her urge to kill (and thus be able to see her family) and because she’s the one who always want to have sex? This ridiculous. What kind of arguments are those? What about the rest of the series?

  28. Bex says:

i totally agree with R. these argumnmts are laughable – literally i actually laughed. some of the people have definatly gone over the top on the whole feminism thing
