In the Press

Kim of Cinematical asks the question, "Is Twilight Anti-Feminist?" and looks at several sides of an interesting and often posed issue.
The Sydney Australia based Sunday Morning Herald has a mixed review of Breaking Dawn. They also feature a different cover shot. Any Aussie fans out there that can tell us if that graphic appears on your books? It’s the first we have seen of it.

Here is a link to the Australia Hachette site the cover is the same as the US cover. As far as I know the cover they used for the article is fan made. I saw It a lot before the real BD cover came out. The writer must not have done enough research.
I’ve seen that cover before, it’s awesome. But if it is real then it leaked way before BD and the cover/chapter came out.
That isn’t our Breaking Dawn cover, we have the exact same one as the U.S. and the rest of the world. The writer probably didn’t look too closely into it.
Yeah, I’ve never seen that cover at the bookshops, ours have to chess pieces on it like all the others
Yeah, our Australian version of BD is the same as the US. The writer must have got another source.
But i do agree with the writer. i have very mixed feelings about BD, and i agree that Edward is just a background character. I felt that it was too rushed in a way-but i dunno, maybe its just us Aussies lol.
I saw that cover way before Breaking Dawn came out on the internet. But I havn’t seen it once on the shelves, every Breaking Dawn book I’ve seen is the same here as it is in the US.
That cover looks very familiar…I
*I think its fan made.
The whole message didn’t send…
I’m Aussie.. but I get my books from Amazon.. we don’t get the hard covers for some really weird reason…
Yeah its the first that ive seen of that cover too. I disagree with the review i loved BD and Reneesme ^-^ I managed to get my copy of BD 9am when the bookstore opened in Perth-i didnt have to wait til noon
The BD article was good, and helped me finally figure out what it was that I couldn’t love. Sure, I have strong issues with the major plot twist, but I’ve been working on loving the book around that. But /here/ is what’s wrong: lack of Edward! Where’s the dazzlement?
As for the feminist article, I found it very interesting; it gave me more material to combat people who think Twilight is anti-feminist. After all, Stephenie Meyer has said time and again, she’s not anti-feminist, she’s anti-human. That becomes very apparent when Bella becomes a vampire.
I remember seeing that cover here on the forums forever ago. I think one of the members on here made it, I just can’t remember which.
I’ve seen that pic-cover like 6 months ago on some website, so i don’t think it could be the cover for breaking dawn
I thought the review was quite right. I loved Breaking Dawn. I was at the edge of my seat for 12 hours, not moving, not eating, just reading to see if my loved characters would survive.
BUT all the initimate, heart racing, swooning moments that really got me into Twilight were gone. I guess that would make sense since they are married now, had sex, noone died, no obtacles in their relationship. Edward and Bella are more relaxed, knowing they belong to each other. No more bantering about how he wants to kill her, can’t live without her etc.
The book was the natural development of a relationship. I love it…
It’s a fan made cover, someone posted it on DeviantArt several months back as a possible cover.
I had never realized why BD seemed…different. But i think the last paragraph of that review was dead-on.
I think that cover was out way before the book was. I dont think its real.
That cover is fanmade. I remember someone in your forums actually made it and posted it along with a bunch of different ones she had also made in the Flight to Phoenix Forum. I don’t remember her name though, it’s killing me! I think she was involved in the Twilight Layouts Myspace site though. All this is just from my memory though.
i could not agree more with the writer of the BD article it got me mad that stephanie did not allow Edward or Bella as a matter of fact much bonding with there daughter. and edward was background something that i hate. i loved the previous books. i guess i just have to act like BD never happened. its better that way.
I didn’t read the review yet, but I’m sure I can guess what the complaint is (I’ve read probably around 20 negative reviews around the interweb.)
SOOO I just got this to say: Why would there not being much of Edward in this story be THAT big of a deal? I mean, we got our wedding scene, we got our scene where he will do ANYTHING to save Bella, we got our scene where he realizes baby isn’t bad, we get yet another scene where he will do ANYTHING to save Bella, we get a happy Hunting scene between the two of them, we get another scene, and another scene….more scenes…and FINALLY THE BEST ENDING TO THE SERIES THE LAST TWO PAGES.
And you guys complain that Edward was a BACKGROUND character? O_o I think you guys are really picky…
This story was told through Bella’s POV. What was her main concern here? HER DAUGHTER. Seriously… When a mom realizes her kid’s life is on the line, more often than not her first priority is keeping that kid alive…
I would have been seriously irratated if Bella had acted any different. She’s a mom now, not a teenager…and to forget about Renesmee so she and Edward can make kissy faces, and stuff would have seriously bugged the crap out of me. This progression of their relationship was very very true to character, even if they were different. It was still the way that they would normally act. It’s a new experience for both of them. XD.
I’ll admit, I would have LOVED to see more interaction between Edward and Renesmee, but at the same time, aren’t dads also REALLY protective of their kids? Edward was also worried about keeping Renesmee, his wife and his family alive… That’s a HUGE responsibility, and not usually something that will just let up so you can play “peek-a-boo” without worrying if you are going to live to see the next day. >_<
As to the Feminist Article… I seriously LOL’d when I heard that feminists were up in arms about this book. SERIOUSLY? Of all the things in the world Feminists can complain over, they get angry about a fairy tale…
I liked that article though, it really defended the series as a whole… because the feminist argument is just so rationalized. So I’ll just say that I pretty much agree with the writer of the article XD
I was pleasantly surprised that the feminist article took SM’s side. It is ridiculous that people think it’s anti-feminist. Those feminists should go fight real issues (like models needing to be a size negative twenty) and leave Twilight alone. The fans are not going to turn against it, especially since it’s not anti-feminist, so they should just save their breath.
I loved BD, Stephenie did a great job and I love the way Bella went from clumsy human to powerful, Kick A** vampire. I just got a kick out of that. I absolutely loved it! I do have to admit, I never expected the book to end that way or even go that way, I had my theories and non of my theories were right. But, that’s why SM is the writer, that’s why she’s the one making the millions and I’m not. She’s the one with the gift, with he amazing mind and I’m not.
Even though I disagree with every person out there that disliked BD, I do have to say that after reading BD a disappointment’s point ( #20 ), I have to say it would have been nice to get a bit more information on the bonding between Edward, Bella and Nessie. It would have been interesting to see that family unit and their family interact… But, to go to the EXTREME to say that she’ll pretend BD never happened is a bit sad. There are a lot of good things in the book, don’t let one or two things ruin the entire series for you.
We all have to remember Stephenie Meyer is the writer and BD is her book. She created that world, she created all the laws of vampire reproduction, human-vamp reproduction, etc. or whatever. and she can change them around with a flick of her magic wand (her pen!) that’s the beauty of being a wrier) Its your world, you are in control. You create the world, the people, you give them life and you can give them death. So, lets stop judging BD, SM, etc. and enjoy her work of art. Let’s enjoy the beautiful world she created for us, a world she has created with loved for all her fans.
OK I’m done now….
That Aussie review was very poorly written. It also seems like all Jenny wanted to read about was “Edward the hero”. She missed so much in BD.
Its true that Edward was a little sie-lined and I’m kinda disppointed about that but I don’t mind that the book was different; it’s just the way that the story happened to go.
As for the anti-feminist review, I agree with anyone who says the series ISN’t anti-feminist. Bella may be physically weak but it’s not like all of us can be extreme weight-lifters. She needs Edward a little too much but he needs HER that much too. And she’s got amazing mental strength.
Um… that was a fake cover wasn’t it. I remember seeing it around, being labeled as ‘fan made’ On a different note, I loved BD. I thought it was the perfect way to end the series.
So I went to the ‘Cinematical’ website and commented… and got spammed. DON’T give them your e-mail,whatever you do, the site isn’t safe… x[
I SO agree with the review. I couldn’t have put it any better myself. That was EXACTLY what was missing in BD. I loved the series because of the interaction between Edward & Bella. Less of Leah (pointless) and more of Edward would have been PERFECT! Introducing all those new characters….pointless…wasted of all those pages. Could have saved it for “play time” between Edward, Bella and Reneseme.
I saw that picture a Barnes and Noble “Reserve Your Copy of Breaking Dawn” paper.
That’s really cool. I hadn’t seen it before.
I completely agree! We didn’t get enough Edward.
Of course not having Edward is a big deal! We didn’t fall in love with Bella! We fell in love with Edward!
Am I the only one who DOESN’T have a problem with Renesmee?
I think that the people that don’t like BD because of it’s lack of dazzling don’t understand that relationships evolve and change. I don’t mean to knock anyone, it’s just the way it is. A married with a baby relationship is different than a just met swept off their feet relationship.
I saw that image on the cover of a local chain grocery store advertisement/flyer in Indiana. I saw the cover and I remember making fun of it because it wasn’t the real thing. Never thought I would see it on here though…soo I guess it’s not fan art?? hmmm
Although I don’t agree with the Aussie journalist, I can see where she (and others) are coming from. I, for one, loved the book. I also loved Renesmee. I’m glad Stephenie ended the series the way she did.
I also liked that the feminist story took Stephenie’s side. Of course Bella was weaker in the previous novels; she was human. But, once she became a vampire, we saw her kick butt and that proved that Stephenie wasn’t anti-feminist.
Yeah, I wanted more Edward & Bella & Nessie…but in a way I was still satisfied with the book, I would have read anything even if she made the book twice as long to show some Ed/Bella love. I got the perfect ending, and I’m good…and LizzT…I don’t have a problem with Renesmee, I think she’s adorable.
I think Renesmee is awesome! People are upset because Bella had her when she was 18. Big whoop! My mom had my sister when she was 18, and she turned freakin’ fine! I would’ve like more dazzling Edward, though. Imagine if it was a boy! Oh, lordy!
I am pretty sure that’s a fan made cover I even think they used emily browning for the girl in it. it’s just photo shop. I’ve seen it alot. it would have been an awesome cover
Awww I wish IT really was that book cover.
Sure would have been pretty<3
Yeah the Aussie cover is the same as Us.
Thanks for putting an Aussie article up :]
Does anyone know whether it will be in the actual newspaper? or is it just a web thing?
Nope, not our cover; we got the paperback of the USA cover. Interesting article, the SMH one, can’t say i agree with everything but it did give a good prespective
I just don’t get it. I don’t get it. Why does everyone keep saying that there’s not enough Edward in BD? Seriously, did we not all read the same book? Edward is ALL throughout the book! Pre-wedding, wedding, honeymoon, pregnancy and all the interaction with Jacob, and after Bella became a vampire. I agree with tw07 – this relationship is a natural progression. You _CAN’T_ stay at the same level of relationship that there was in Twilight. I would be bored to tears if it had, and I’m sure everyone would be really pissed off if nothing had changed.
Unbelievable. *shaking head*
May I just say it’s awesome to see so many Australian fans. Way to go. <3
We have the same cover as the rest of the world. I’m not sure whats going on with that one there…
Hey, I’m an Aussie, and i totally see where the writer has come from. I think we were all expecting to see alot more of BellaXEdward, but, as SM is the author, she put in more characters and made a HUGE twist on the plot that we all wernt expecting.
I think the writer got it spot on, i think we were expecting alot more of Edward AS he was in the other three books. But as i read the comments, someone said that That was their relationship growing. Now that Bella is a vampire, the obsticles are jumped, and they dont need to be carefull anymore.
ALSO-i thought the book written in a rush (kind of.) to me, it just didnt sound like SM wrote the book. anyways, Cheers
I’ll be honest, and don’t shoot me… I didn’t LOVE breaking Dawn like I did the other three books of the series, and here’s why I think it is, as a teen(just), I feel that Bella getting married, having Nessie it took it out of the realm that most of the younger readers can relate to. Perhaps if you’re older with more life experiences, you may be able to better empathise with Bella through breaking dawn.
Personally though for me, I didn’t feel as emotionally invested. I agree that the relationship dynamic had to change, but in doing so it perhaps lost some of the appeal to me. However, that said, I don’t know how else the story could have concluded otherwise.
But thats just my opinion, and I’m not saying anyone has to agree with what I think.
BTW, OT, why don’t we get hard covers in Australia? My poor copy of twilight may have fared a great deal better as a hard cover…
That cover wasn’t in the paper. It didn’t even have a cover, just a bad pic of a vampire (with fangs… it is really obvious that the reporter doesn’t like the Twilight Saga…) and we do have hard cover you just have to pay more and order it.
I had seen that cover somewhere, probably google, but it was not in or on my aussie copy of BD
Hey I’m from Australia and no, we have exactly the same cover as the Americans for Breaking Dawn, the chess peices. Except we only get paperback, which get ruined more easily.
I’m from Australia and I have never seen that cover before. It looks interesting but maybe it’s a fan made design? The copy of Breaking Dawn I own is just like the American one – with the chess pieces.
huh, that’s an interesting cover… it’s kinda cool. but it is probably just a fan made one… still, i like the idea…
