Last week tons of people chimed in with their thoughts on Love and Mythical Creatures. This week we have a very interesting topic for you. It is certainly a question that to this day gets fans in heated discussions. This week we present:
Was Edward an idiot to leave Bella in NM? Or was it justified? Was this noble of him, or arrogant, or selfish, or stupid, or just tragically mistaken? If you think it was wrong of him (rather than just a terrible mistake), can you forgive him?
We’re going to try a slightly different format this week. To get the discussion rolling, we’re putting up a pair of starting posts, one Pro and one Con, to lay out some beginning arguments on either side of the debate.

You know, I dont think a debate on this is a good one. Why? If you want to know the real answer…ask Stephenie. Its all in her head. She is Edward, Bella, Jacob and everyone else in the book. We have to remember, this is a book. Its not real. Although she makes them soooo reallllll!!! Thats the wonder of her writings. If it was not so realistic we would not all Love Edward, Bella, Jacob and everyone else! Love these books.
Can I add one more question to the list?
If Edward had never tried to leave Bella, would it be right to say that he truly loved her?

good question Stephenie! His leaving is what made both of them realize just how much they truly loved each other, since each of them thought that they were not good enough for the other…Edward only was trying to do the right thing. Like SM has already said, Edward is impulsive, and he was just trying to protect Bella. Turns out though, that she’s not better off without him…she’s much better and safer with him around than with him not. Difficult question to debate, cause the answer isn’t an “on-the-surface” answer…it lies deep within the thoughts of these characters, and like life, just because someone makes a mistake doesn’t mean that they’re selfish or arrogant! Some fans jump to conclusions too quickly. I was sad for Edward that he felt he had to do that, to be on good moral terms, he felt he had to. But it was a mistake that strengthened their love for each other and is what made them realize that they are complete with each other, but without each other, they are always missing something.
hmm..I also agree with Pinky…SM has already answered this question, opinions can be made but you can’t mistake the FAQs that SM has already answered to help clarify our opinions/misunderstandings.

Pinky, I get your point, but I don’t think they’re asking us why he did it, they’re asking us why we think he did it. You could make the point for any debate question that this is just fiction and the only one who knows is Stephenie. This is just for fun.
Oh, and I think he was tragically mistaken. He really did think that was what was best for her. And I kind of think that without that time apart, Bella’s decision to be changed wouldn’t have been made with all the information. She now knows she literally cannot live without him.
that is a really good question and I liked your answer DancingUnderStars! I mean this really helped them to realize they can’t live without each other and it opened up a whole new version of their relationship.
I think debates are a GREAT way for people to unleash their opinions on things, even if the author has already answered to it. How many things do we still discuss that SM has already answered to? There’s always multiple perspectives =) And a point to the forum is that everyone has a say in the series.
And I particularly like this question.

Bella MIGHT have chosen Jacob if Edward hadn’t left. She says so herself in Eclipse. (In a manner of speaking.) She knows what life was like without Edward and knew life without Jake would be easier. Soooo, Edward leaving, dumb, yes. Forgivable, of course! Necessary, absolutely. That’s my opinion anyhow. Like anybody really cares.

edward wanted to give bella a chance to leading a normal life..he truly loves her and learned it the hard way.
be safe he said and he really meant it even if it excluded him.
I think that Edwar was simply mislead in thinking that she would stop loving him and move on after he left. After what happened with James, and the incident at her birthday. He thought she’d be safe. He didn’t want to see her get hurt.
To sum up he left because he loved her and wanted her to live a normal life without the fear of his kind.
Dumb, oh yeah, but unforgivable, not a chance.
Honeslty, I think Edward was insanely stupid to leave Bella in a mad attempt to see if he would still miss her. If I was Bella I would have moved on to Jacob, he really loves her no matter what.
Seriously, he would be my ex after that no matter what- even if he is insanely hot.
I don’t think Bella would have fallen in love with Jake if Edward hadn’t left.
When Edward was still in her life she didn’t go and hang out with Jake a lot like she did after Edward left. If Edward stayed, Bella wouldn’t have spent a lot of time with Jake to develop more than just a friendship.
We all know that Edward and Bella would kill themselves for eachother. Edward even said that if Bella LOVED Jacob more than him that she could be with him if she would be happier, and that he only whated the best for her. But Bella knew she could NEVER do that.
Edward left Bella because he thought it was for the BEST (even though he was wrong, but I guess even vampires make mistakes). He knew what she wanted of him and he felt that he was a major danger.
He completely ignored his own feelings so he could make sure no harm came to Bella. He loves her so much that he was willing to go even though it KILLED him. (and got him shipped off to Brazil)
I think him leaving Bella was a traggic mistake and that they both grew and realized how much they needed to be together. So even though it was horrible, i believe it actually HELPED them both.
I think did what he thought he had to do. He knows how stubborn Bella is and was tired of putting in danger, so did what he thought was best, he took himself out the picture.
