Jacob takes over the narration and has an aggravating conversation with Leah. She explains to him that she has had a dream about kissing Bella Swan all because of how he has transmitted his own feelings to the rest of the pack. Fighting back, Jacob gives her the same lecture about her feelings about Sam. She spits on him for his remark and darts off to the trees .
Jacob contemplates what it will be like for him when Bella is a vampire and how difficult it will be for him to think of her as an enemy. Worse than that, he worries that Edward might kill her and that he, in turn, would try to kill Edward.
Frustrated and hungry, he heads home to find his father rambling on about nothing important. This is generally a sign that there is something important that needs to be discussed, and Jacob really doesn’t want to hear it. Jacob tries to eat as fast as he can, but doesn’t manage to avoid the impending discussion.
Billy tells Jacob that they received a letter, specifically a wedding invitation. Jacob rips the fancy envelope open to find not only an invitation to the wedding, but also a personal note from Edward. The note states that Edward is breaking the rules by inviting Jake, but that if things had gone differently, Edward would have wanted the choice he is now giving Jake. He also thanks Jake for Bella and everything Jake did for her.
Heartbroken, Jacob runs from the house and transforms into his wolf self. He demands that his friends leave him alone, and to his surprise, Sam backs him up on the request. One by one, his friends shift into their human selves to leave Jake alone as a wolf. He runs into the woods putting as much distance between him and Forks.

“This is making me sick, Jacob. Can you imagine what this feels like to me? I don’t even like Bella Swan. And you’ve got me grieving over this leech-lover like I’m in love with her, too. Can you see where that might be a little confusing? I dreamed about kissing her last night! What the hell am I supposed to do with that?” ~ Leah to Jacob
"I promise I will take care of her, Jacob. Thank you—for her—for everything." ~ Edward’s letter to Jacob
If the silence in my head lasted, I would never go back. I wouldn’t be the first one to choose this form over the other. Maybe, if I ran far enough away, I would never have to hear again… I pushed my legs faster, letting Jacob Black disappear behind me. ~ Jacob’s thoughts leaving Forks
