Summary: In this chapter we find Bella sensing something is definitely wrong with Edward. His eyes betray his actions as he distances himself emotionally from Bella. While she deals with an emotionally disconnected Edward she is slapped with the news that her best friend, Alice, has left with Jasper, because of the horrifying events of her birthday party. Our dear Bella then begins to cling to a life that she longs desperately to be apart of, only to get shut out at every turn. Her fears are realized when she finds her self at the forest’s edge with Edward, her one true love. Only to discover that he is finished with her, he and his family are leaving Forks forever. Leaving her, alone.
A desperate run after Edward through the forest leaves her lost and crippled emotionally beyond repair. Bella lay there unable to move for hours, night came, and then the dawn, but there was always rain. As she lay there on the forest floor she could hear the voices calling her name, but she hadn’t the strength to reply to their calls. This is when we are formally introduced to the ever-mysterious Sam Uley. Who finds Bella and carries her to the arms of her waiting father, Charlie. Dr. Gerandy confirms Bella’s fears as he confirms the Cullen’s departure to Charlie.
After drifting off to sleep Bella is awoken by a phone call. A phone call that proclaims a Quileute Tribe celebration, in honor of the Cullen’s departure from the area. This news only serves to force Bella into her current Edward-less reality. After a difficult questioning by her father, she rushes to her room in search of solace and comfort. Worried that Edward might have taken away her most treasured possessions. She looks for her CD…gone. Then she turns to her scrapbook and finds that just like the CD all pictures of Edward are gone. The last straw is then broken and Bella collapses to the floor, not in a fainting spell as she might have hoped for. Instead she collapses under the shear force of grief. And there she remains… October… November… December… January.
“Bella, I don’t want you to come with me.”
“It will be as if I never existed”
