Copyright Theft

This evening, we were appalled to see that some ‘fan’ of Twilight thought it was acceptable to steal material from the Twilight Lexicon, and reproduce it on another website as their own. You can see an example of this on this page where our timeline has been reproduced without permission. This thief has also taken character bios and other parts of the lexicon, freely admitting that they had taken it from us, despite our copyright notification at the footer of each Lexicon page.

At the Lexicon, we take a very dim view of this copyright theft. All material posted on this site belongs either to us, or to Stephenie Meyer herself. Anyone who reproduces this material elsewhere is violating the ownership of the documents here. To prevent this again, we have instructed a lawyer to draw up a terms of service, which will be posted on the site, to give us further legal recourse, should this kind of theft happen again.

We will not accept the stealing of our hard work. We work hard on this site because we love Twilight and the world that Stephenie has created for us and want to share it with all of you. A copyright violation complaint has been made with the webhost of the site that has stolen our material and we expect the relevant sections of the site to be removed forthwith.

NO! That’s awful! Who would do such a thing?
I’m disapointed. I thought all of us here at the Lexicon were, well, friends and could trust one another. It’s sad that someone’s been stealing and copying from this site. Isn’t that plagerism, and like thievery of creative propety?
Well. I’m glad you two are taking care of it! Thanks!
    Arda S.

  2. That is simply horrid. I can’t believe that someone would steal information from this site. That just shows that some people don’t respect the hard work that you’re putting into the lexicon. I agree that it is very appalling. If they were really interested in Twilight they could come up with their own information. I’m very happy that you are taking care of it also.

  3. Good on you! I don’t think some owners of sites actually realised. I had to tell someone to change their header picture because it was the fan art (and they have). Would you say using a cover of Twilight in your website layout is illegal?

If it is used without permission of the publishing company/illustrator it is. They may choose to consider it infringement or free publicity. It is completely up to the individuals who did the work how they view it, and how they chose to pursue the matter

PS Thanks for getting getting whoever to remove the fan art that we are using.

That’s unaccpetable. I think it’s a good thing that you guys are taking the necessary precautions. Keep up the good work. :)

  5. Well I think I’ll change my layout.

  6. i can’t believe someone would steal from this site! that’s just low

  7. Hellish Red Devil says:

Eeek! That’s not very nice. Glad it’s being all sorted out. Whew.

  8. mythfilledgrl says:

I know. The person even admitted this as if it was all a joke. Is that person even gonna erase wut she copied and apologise?

  9. Alda Rethe says:

-whistles- That is one bad seed. Who would actually cheat you hard working lexicon-writers like that? Do you think they knew they were violating ownership (even though the copyright thing was right there on every page)?
I’m glad you’ve got a lawyer working on it now though. I hope it never happens again.

ALAS! Gather yee pitch-forks and torches…
No not really. I just think it is awful and snobbish to steal from a site that works so hard to provide it’s usuers happiness. If only my computer would allow me to reach in with my hands and strangle the neck of the bad-doer. Hmph.

  11. Snowtigress says:

Funny how on the fan’s site she/he said that she/he wasn’t a fan of stealers T.T…

Anyway I really like what you’ve done to the website. Awesome picture as the header. ::falls in love again:: XD

Good luck to you and the rest of the staff.

  12. Ahk! That is horrible! I hope this never happens again!!

  13. dude….. that is so messed up to copy something and call it your own…..tsk tsk….

  14. Cant really blame them…the old saying copying is the highest form of flattery…but that did cross quite a few lines. Glad youve caught them. Its never fun when sites start compteing. *has experience from HP site wars* Guess they just thought your stuff was so amazing. Still, shame on them.

  15. *sigh* Obnoxiousness apparently knows no limits.

Regardless of whether they felt it was an act of flattery or praise for all that the Lexicon provides, it was wrong and uncalled for to take it from this site that Alphie and Imogen have worked so hard on.

  16. Black Angel says:

Mmm… I don’t think that girl knows she’s doing a bad thing. It sounds to me like she thinks it’s okay to post other people’s work on your site as long as you say where you got it from. Taking information from other places is valido, just not in the way she did it. Maybe someone should explain to her the ethics of internet posting.

I’m glad you guys are doing the whole lawyer thing. It’s always best to be protected.

  17. DanceUntilDawn says:

Agh, I hate how there are people like that. They try taking the easy way around things. Well I’m glad it’s being sorted out. =)

  18. yuck! who is that foolish to come to a fan site and then copy it like it is nothing? couldn’t that person just asked for permission or tell where they got the info from its not that hard!

  19. Jessica says:

I can’t believe that someone would just TAKE someone else’s hard work!! That is just horrible! It is just common scence not to copy from a really nice site that has been put to hard work!! I just hope that this person learns form this!!

  20. Wow. Finally someone that can talk about theft and curtain things like that. I hope that people will learn and stop stealing things that aren’t thiers.

  21. Wow. That was – REALLY stupid. I mean come on… stealing from the twilight lexicon, probably the best known Twilight site, and believing noone will notice? -.-

  22. my_disadvantage says:

That’s very stupid! They just don’t imagination! Stealing – that’s not fair. You have worked a LOT for Twilightlexicon – and they just stole stuff right here. The ones who stole texts and etc, they are ridiculous and stupid!!

  23. It was wrong of them to do such things. Stealing is unacceptable. Although, and I am not trying to sound rude when I say this, but I feel it has to be said… It was also wrong of you to post the URL to the violater’s site. Matters like this should be held confidentially and in a quiet matter. Yes, what this person did was wrong, but did you have to post the site? A simple warning to people would have sufficed. Yeah, your stuff was stolen, yeah, you worked hard on your site, but publically scolding this person was just as wrong.

Don’t get me wrong, guys, I LOVE everything you have here, it’s beautifully done and organized and a blessing to all Twilight fans. I’m glad you decided to take action, heaven knows I would do the same, but if there is a next time, keep it between you and the person, please?

  24. TwilightFreak says:

What kindof person would ever steal from Twilight Lexicon? That is just horrible! Whoever did this is not a true Twilight fan!!

  25. I. Am. Appalled.

  26. thats so stupid who would do that?
